I've stayed at Macondo several times and it has always been very good and safe. The location is perfect, you can walk to many of Cuenca's main attractions (Parque Calderon, the cathedral, food market, hippie jewelry market, etc.) but it is quiet once you go in the hostal and relax in the courtyard. Staff is super helpful, rooms and bathrooms... More

This is a good place to stay in downtown Cuenca, close to everything. The garden is lovely where you can enjoy your breakfast. The garden rooms are the best and quiet. I'm thankful to the kind owner, Steven for helping me out in a bad situation and especially for the kindness of his partner taking care of me.

Please note that 5 stars are given for this category of inn, to wit a $30-40 place to stay. This is not a luxury hotel but a well located hotel/hostel at a great price. The room I had for $35 was located next to a garden/ courtyard with beautiful blooming bushes. There is a kitchen with refrigerator which is available... More

Within the limits of the old town, but closer to the edge, this is a good basic place to go. The rooms are simple but clean. Yet, the quietness of the inside gardens with their chairs and hammock are the perfect place to take a break. Most of the staff are quite attentive, either while preparing breakfast or at the... We stayed for four nights. Nothing special, but just expected stay. We stayed at a backyard room. The room is somewhat small, but clean. They have a beautiful backyard guarden. Breakfast was fine - bread, cheese, coffee, tea, and juice. The location is good. I have a mixed feeling about the staff service or travel advice. I asked for a... More

We stayed at Macondo for 2 nights as it was highlighted as recommended on our footprint guide. The building is actually very nice and clean but I think it's overrated and overpriced. The breakfast only includes bread butter jam and juices, if you want eggs or fruits you need to pay! Plus don't pay with credit card cause the fee... More

I had read that the old, nice looking colonial rooms are not so recommendable due to being noisy because they are close to the reception desk. I therefore had asked for a room surrounding the garden. Well, it was a very small room and although with window it feels dark and I felt like suffocating. A strange thing is that... More

While some of the rooms are small, it is still a very comfortable place to stay. I spent 4 nights there in June so the nights were very cold but there were plenty of blankets on the bed and also a small electric heater in the room. Breakfast is the usual Andean Hostal fare and if you wanted something different... More
