Wife and I stayed here back in 2012 (the site doesn't provide reviews going back that far in the date block). We felt comfortable with the security and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of the back area and the inner courtyard. The rooms are much like any place in Ecuador, sound does carry, however, it wasn't that distracting or bothersome. Worth... More

The hotel is comfortable, beautiful, ideally located, the rooms are large and comfortable and look over a nice garden with a hammock. The complimentary breakfast is quite good too. The thing is we had problems with the hot water every morning, even though the staff were very helpful and always made sure that the problem be addressed. But asking every... More

Hostal Macondo was a very nice surprise! When you walk through the front door it's like entering another community . So different from the traffic and noise outside. We stayed in #7 suite in order to have a quiet area. Unfortunately another resident's or staff member's little dog barked a lot and was annoying. But that does seem to be... More

Very good location, helpful, English speaking staff. The rooms were quiet with comfortable beds. Self serve breakfast were fine with refills on coffee and staff did prepare eggs and juice with fruit cup. Kitchen is available for private use and the front desk has cold beer for sale. Safe and secure, it was very good value-around $35 and they accept... More

I've stayed at Macondo several times and it has always been very good and safe. The location is perfect, you can walk to many of Cuenca's main attractions (Parque Calderon, the cathedral, food market, hippie jewelry market, etc.) but it is quiet once you go in the hostal and relax in the courtyard. Staff is super helpful, rooms and bathrooms... More

This is a good place to stay in downtown Cuenca, close to everything. The garden is lovely where you can enjoy your breakfast. The garden rooms are the best and quiet. I'm thankful to the kind owner, Steven for helping me out in a bad situation and especially for the kindness of his partner taking care of me.

Please note that 5 stars are given for this category of inn, to wit a $30-40 place to stay. This is not a luxury hotel but a well located hotel/hostel at a great price. The room I had for $35 was located next to a garden/ courtyard with beautiful blooming bushes. There is a kitchen with refrigerator which is available... More

Within the limits of the old town, but closer to the edge, this is a good basic place to go. The rooms are simple but clean. Yet, the quietness of the inside gardens with their chairs and hammock are the perfect place to take a break. Most of the staff are quite attentive, either while preparing breakfast or at the...
