Friendly hosts combined with a peaceful, tranquil and beautiful setting. Loved waking up to the birds singing every morning in their beautiful garden. Anyone staying in Cuenca for a short period of time, this place is highly recommended (check out the suite).

I spent 7 weeks at the Macondo in March & April of 2015. I fell in love with the peaceful atmosphere, clean surroundings, friendly staff, central location, and quality of visitors that I met at the hostel during my stay. I was able to arrange a long term rental rate while volunteering at a local school for almost 2 months.... More

I loved this charming hostel located near all the Cuenca must-see's. I appreciated its cleanliness, efficient staff, affordable cost and (maybe most importantly for me) how remarkably quiet this place was. The manager bent over backwards to get a driver for me in the pouring rain when no taxis were available. Without her help I could easily have missed my... More

GREAT place to stay! The free book exchange is such a nice bonus. Rooms are impeccably clean and staff is super friendly. Hostal Macondo is truly a piece of paradise in the middle of the historic center. Reasonable rates and you can feel good knowing that the ownership and management are great people who give back to the community they... More

Macondo is the perfect place to stay when visiting Cuenca. It's a short, safe walk from the center of town. It's quiet and clean with a wonderful staff, a charming garden, and plenty of hot water. Breakfast is just right and the vibe throughout is casual and quaint.

My favorite place to stay in Cuenca is Hostal Macondo, a quiet charming hostal that is much closer to a boutique hotel than a backpacker hostel. After being on the road for work in Ecuador for three weeks, I was very glad to have laundry service, hot showers, delicious breakfast (great coffee!), and fast wifi. I paid $35 per night... More

Macondo is located near the center of Cuenca in a colonial style building. It is tucked away with a double entrance. Once the doors open, you are in paradise; it is a refuge from the city noise. It is quiet and peaceful. The grounds are spectacular, complete with a coconut tree, beautiful flowers, and hummingbirds. There is beautiful Ecuadorean artwork... More

This Hostal is tucked away from the main street leading to a lovely colonial style garden inn. Rooms are varied depending on number of guests and amenities, such as personal bathroom, bed size, and budget. Breakfast is included. Wifi connection is strong with several router terminals. Courtyard is very lovely and the flowers attracts hummingbirds. If you want rustic charm,... More

This place has to be one of the quietest place I have ever stayed. There was not a peep. The grounds are very beautiful. There are areas to sit outside whether you want to be in the sun, shade, under cover, it's all there. There is a kitchen to use. The breakfast was very good. The WiFi was great. The... More

Hi, We're happy you enjoyed Cuenca. Sorry the water wasn't as hot as you would have liked. Since the gas is in tanks and not piped in from the street, even though we try, we don't always know soon enough when a tank runs out. Sometimes it happens when someone is showering and it's awkward to report :) Best wishes. More

After two weeks in a fourth floor studio apartment facing a typically busy and noisy street in Cuenca, it was a relief to spend the night and following day at Hostal Macondo lounging and catching up on work before flying back home that evening. The descriptions given by other reviewers are accurate. Hostal Macondo is simple, well-maintained, and, I guess,... More
