I spent almost a month at Hostal Macondo in June of 2009. It was the biggest bargain in all of Ecuador and one of the best places I stayed in my two month stay in the country. The hostal was always immaculate, the staff very friendly, the others guests always interesting and considerate and the location perfect for being close... more

I recommend macondo because the hostel is safe and very clean. it's nothing to write home about, but the set-up is cute and the courtyard is cozy. I didn't give it a higher rating because the breakfast is only bread...fine, I likebread. But it's the same price as all the other hostels in the area, which provide the usual egg,... more

This hostal is very clean and the rooms are cleaned very quickly. I stayed in a room off the outside courtyard and, while pretty and quiet as far as the street noise goes, the courtyard is very noisy in terms of being able to hear all of your neighbors as well as the cleaning staff all the time. Added to... more

I really can't see much to like about the Macondo. If your normal residence is the Greyhound bus station in NorthEast DC, then perhaps this is a quiet refuge. But if you enjoy a minimum of peace and quiet, then there are many many other options for you in wonderful Cuenca. It must be said that someone staying in the... more

We spent 3 nights at Hostal Macondo and thought it had some great facilities. It provides a little oasis away from the pollution and noise of the streets in Cuenca, the common areas are surrounded with beautiful plants. The kitchen is one of the most beautiful we have seen ever in a hostal (it helps that they use the kitchen... more

We were EXTREMELY happy with the Hostal Macondo. Excellent location- a 5-7 minute walk from all of the sites of Cuenca's Old Town and River. A 5 minute taxi ride from the airport or bus terminal. We had two SUPER large rooms- one for my husband and I- with three beds and one for our two sons- with five beds!... more

I've been staying in Cuenca's Mocando for a few days to a few months for the last 8 years. The rooms range from small with external bath to large with attached bath. The place is quiet and not for party animals. Bachelor herds aren't to be found. It has an international clientale and often people gather in the dining room,... more

Great location in Cuenca. Close enough to walk around. Safe area. Double rooms extremely large with private bathroom. Excellent shower with hot water. Breakfast was outstanding. Eggs, toast, coffee-tea, fresh juice, granola etc. They also offer filtered water and coffee-tea all day so that is a nice touch. Secure rooms also. Very clean. more

I am wrapping up a week long stay in Cuenca and have stayed at Hostal Macondo the whole time. This is a good choice for a hostel while in Cuenca. It is located near the historic center yet still a few blocks off so you avoid some of the noise of the very core of the center - easily walkable,... more

Two years ago we discovered Macondo and were delighted. We had a large room with nice beds and the staff was friendly and breakfast was wonderful. The cook was a pleasant old lady who made great juice and hot chocolate. Last year we returned, our reservation was "lost" and we were stuffed in a closet of a room with horrible... more
