The photos posted by management are not from this hotel. The ones posted by others are. This is a 16th century hacienda and it shows. It appears to have been fixed up a decade or two ago but hasn't seen much maintenance. The bathroom tiles need grouting, it needs paint and above all new mattresses. The staff are friendly, food... I stayed here with a G Adventures group. We certainly appreciated the historical aspect: classically decorated rooms with fireplaces and antiques, 2 old churches on site, and horses roaming on the property. Perhaps it's all part of the experience, but the standards really do feel like something from 150 years ago. The rooms are cold and constantly need to be... More

Guachala is an amazing, romantic place much closer to God and the Middle Ages than anything you have likely ever seen. Its not a Hilton but it is a beautiful place in the mountains with great food - the trout is fantastic !! I stayed there for about 10 days last summer and will go up next weekend. Diego and... More

Perhaps the owner was on his own vacation when we stayed, but we definitely did not have the welcoming experiences of stories told that others did. The Hacienda: After walking the grounds, I felt nothing but depressed. Everything was run down; upkeep and maintenance was clearly not high on the list. Inside rooms all stank of mold and mildew. If... More

I was very excited to go to Hacienda Guachala and booked a room for the night when two of my sisters and a friend came to town. My sister is vegetarian so I made sure to check the menu. When I looked online it seemed as though the Hacienda had a wide selection of food and drinks as well as... More

If your benchmark is Hilton forget this place. If you are a romantic at heart you will see the spleadour of the sixteenth century buildings and not the flaking paint the squeaky floorboards and ill fitting doors. We stayed here as a tour group of 12 for two nights and had a great time. Many in our party said that... More

There is no separate category for restaurant only for this Hacienda, so I am including it here. The place seemed like it needed some upkeep- the grounds and property were very basic. I would rate this place a 2.5. The service was quite slow for lunch. I believe it took us almost 2 hours for lunch which was far more... More

I travelled here as part of a large group and the owners went out of their way to accommodate us. The setting was beautiful and the facilities were top quality. The indoor swimming pool was great for pool volleyball and the surrounding area provided some nice walks. The food was tasty too and we even got to try guinea pig!... More

It was amazing to be a guest on such a special spot. The Hacienda is pretty well conserved, maintained and run by very friendly and helpful staff. A great place to rest in between climbs as well. The food was was simple but amazing, especially breakfast that looked more like a banquet.

The Hacienda Guachala, is a cultural delight! I believe it is the oldest hacienda in Ecuador! Yes, it falls pray to power outages, but listening to the wind dance through the trees is worth the outage. You do need to wait for fresh food to be prepared, but hey, I prefer it fresh. If you sit on the gorgeous veranda... More
