This hotel is a welcome step back in time to when large merchant houses overlooked the sea in this wonderful city. Structurally little has changed, even the calendar looks like it could have been operating in the mid 19th century. But do not let this put you off, it's enchanting with all mod cons (sorry no AC) with fine beds... More

If your idea of a hotel is an American chain like Marriot do not contemplate spending a second at this hotel - you'll hate it. If you have - dare I say it - a more European and adventurous attitude - you might relish the experience. It's an old house, somewhat dilapidated, stuffed with mismatched furniture. Each room is unique... More

We booked this hotel as a pre-cruise stay through hotels.com/Delta. It was pre-paid which was a big mistake. Our driver dropped us off as close to the hotel as possible-you cannot pull up in front. We dragged our bags down the street steps and up the front steps of the hotel. There are no elevators and your room could be... More

Cons: The walls are paperthin (hearing too many personal things from neighbours) The breakfast "service" is very friendly but often lacking basics Incomprehensible that the front desk blocks the door and makes entrance very difficult Strange ratio between room size (very small) and bathroom size (very large) - yet the small room is filled with unusable furniture and there's nowhere... This was an adorable lovely old hotel. It was very well maintained and the girl at the front desk was very sweet. Regardless of this, though, I found it unacceptable for the hotel to be blaring techno music past midnight on a Thursday night. The neighborhood was quiet and cute, so it was really just the hotel itself that was... More

I'm on my 5th day of a 6 day stay at Gran Hotel Gervasoni. My average room rate is USD$140 per night. Here is my experience: Pros: - Nice old architecture, common areas are clean. - *Great* location, at the top of a funicular, overlooking the bay, close to (and at the same height as) a great neighborhood for dining... This is an old quaint hotel with great views but you aren't staying in a hotel for the views alone. Sometime you would like to sleep and that never happened here. The rooms are very small and the bathroom so tiny you have to sit sideways on the toilet. The breakfast was minimal and the dining room was not big... More

Noisy: inside and out! Every step on the ancient wooden staircases echo throughout the room (we were in #8). NO A/C, so only ventilation is to open balcony doors, which even when closed do not block out the neighborhood noise. With them open, the noise is unbearable - and no screens, so insets come in. This is a place to... More

Valparaiso is a lovely seaside town an hour or so from Santiago, Chile. We stayed in the Gervasoni in November 2014 and it is a quirky hotel in a fabulous position overlooking the bay and harbour. It is close to some great restaurants. Service is reasonable for the grade of hotel. We got no sleep on our first night because... More

We stayed for 3 nights while we were in Valpo. The hotel has lots of history and the rooms are nice but kind of old just as the house. The bathroom is renovated but still small but cant complain since it is part of this historical charm. The staff is very friendly. The hotel is located jut steps from an... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Hotel is the fruit of lengthy restoration work to recover one of the homes of greatest cultural value in the hills of Valparaiso, measuring more than 11,000 square feet. This house was built by European immigrants circa 1870. The imposing building, now transformed into a boutique hotel, uniquely portrays, through its welcoming setting, the lifestyles of the generations of families that lived on the hill. The house’s architecture takes you back in time to the mode of life at the end of the 19th century. Luxury refurbishings concordant to the comforts of a five-star hotel interweave discreetly throughout the patrimonial air in the house, creating just the right cross between tradition and modernness. ... more   less
