Betel Box Hostel is in a vibrant historical area of Singapore and staying there enabled me to learn much more about the many different ethnic cultures in Singapore. It is a bustling, lively area which boasts beautiful architecture such as restored shop-houses, eateries galore and food stalls. I thoroughly enjoyed all 18 days of my stay at Betel Box Hostel.... Clean, quite cheap and a good bed in a quiet 20 person dorm with a free breakfast and free wifi. Not central but with excellent public transportation nearby (I kept discovering buses that stop somewhere close by). So in total a regular good hostel. The staff is what makes it stand out. Tinnie and Tony and the other receptionists (sorry... More

Stayed here for 3 nights with a friend. Good clean dorms with a/c and fan. Showers were clean but very small, not much room to move. Common area was nice and good to meet people. Good wifi but only worked in the common room. Kitchen where you could cook food and had a fridge and freezer. Breakfast included and free... More

We stayed in the private double room. We had to leave after the first night because a Norwegian Rat came into the room and was scurrying across the bed. I asked the management for a trap but he considered it unethical and instead gave me a tray of glue. I was also given a recent newspaper article which described Norweigen... More

We are sorry for the bad experience in November 2014. Due to the heavy monsoon rain in November 2014, there were increase sightings of rodents across Singapore; rodents would seek higher ground to escape drowning. The room in question is on the third floor and does not any direct access to open pipes or rubbish bins. It is likely that... More

I stayed here for three nights and I had a great stay. Though as you know it's not in the centre, but it's not far to the metro station. Staff is nice and very helpful. Breakfast is included, but a bit sober. Coffee and tea is provided the whole day. I stayed in the 8 bed dorm which was perfectly... More

The Betel Box is just perfect as Hostle in Singapore. They offer a very relaxing livingroom at the reception where you can have free coffee or tea all day long and also other drinks at reasonable price (eg. Anchor Beer 4,80 S$). The breakfast is a small buffet with different kinds of toastbread, nice jams and chocolatecream. Speeping- and bathrooms... More

I stayed here with my daughter back in October last year. As we had 18 days planned in Singapore we decided to split up our accomm to save on costs. We spent 3 nights at Betel Box when we arrived and another 3 before flying home. The location was fantastic for us - we went to Singapore to eat and... More

We arrived in Singapore only to find our airline had lost our luggage. We had no choice but to leave the airport and head to Betel box and wait for them. Our taxi found the hostel easily and from the moment we arrived the staff were amazing. They sympathised with us over our lost bags and gave us towels free... More

Staying in Joo Chiat

Neighborhood Profile
Joo Chiat
The Joo Chiat area is the traditional home of Peranakan culture in Singapore, an ethnic group descending from the blending of Chinese and Malay families in the 15th century. The neighborhood is packed with colorful shops, local characters, and quiet charm. The main streets overflow with diners enjoying katong laksa, the signature Peranakan spicy noodle soup. Signs of youthful entrepreneurship are visible as well, with modern cafes, bars, and shops abounding. Visit Joo Chiat to take a break from the big city sights and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with a laid-back and local vibe.
