I would say Hotel81 Orchid is a practical choice. Very close to excellent food restaurants from morning to sun-down. I even had an excellent frog and a rice porrige. Shops are just around the corner and just a few train stop to down-town.

This is an Average Budget Hotel, suitable for solo travelers. The location of hotel is nearby metro station Kallang which is at walkable distance approx. 10 min. Singapore city is well connected by metro, thus all major tourist attractions are easily accessible. Hotel does not have restaurant in the premises but there are many eateries in the locality. The Hotel... More

There is nothing which stands out for this hotel (+ve or -ve) apart from its price point. Granted its near the local red light area and if you roam around post evening you will see the ladies in the street, but we were in singapore for 5 days and it didn't bother us at all as the area is still very... this is a nice budget hotel, the room is clean but the bathroom was too small. It is nice to walk to MRT station which is not far from this hotel, also there were many shopping area nearby. Tips: ask for bigger bathroom for you who have bigger size

It's probably top budget hotel in pricey Singapore but you'll have to experience some "moments" staying there. It's right next to brothels and many bring prostitutes directly to the hotel. The hotel is close to metro station, about 7 minutes walking, and there are good local food around.

Staying in Geylang

Neighborhood Profile
Geylang
Only a short journey from Singapore’s sparkling and polished city center, Geylang is a world away. Here in one of the least touristy areas of Singapore, visitors are privy to an unfiltered glimpse of Singapore life. On Sunday afternoons, migrant workers gather in Geylang to let off steam after a tough week. At the eastern end of Geylang Road, families and friends happily enjoy picnics. By contrast, at the western end, a more colorful side of Singapore can be seen, as street workers mingle with Sunday revelers in outdoor coffee shops. Take a friend, grab a beer and a local meal (frog porridge, perhaps?), and settle in to enjoy the show.
