We already knew that the hotel was situated in a red lights district, which didn't really bother us. And the hotel did look nice from the outside and at the lobby. Check-in was smooth, the room looked nice at a glance... but smelled of tobacco. I have raised the smelly room issue with the staff who said: "All of our... More

I stayed here for an overnight transit and choose the hotel for its price and relative vicinity to the airport. The rooms are tiny, which is fine, but the first one stank of cigarettes. I was moved to another room but that one also stank as the ceiling was covered in mold. I realised I was staying in the red... More

I went to Singapore for a second time and I realized that I had already made a big mistake when decided not to book a room in advance. I happened to be at this hotel without reservation then got prefered to the opposite hotel which is also 81 star hotel. Repception wasn't really welcome us. I got into the room... More

Three of us stayed in a triple room at Hotel 81 Star for three nights from the 22nd to 25th of July 2014. I was a little hesitant to book this hotel due to some of the previous reviews and details about the location etc. All of that changed when we reached the hotel. Check in took us about 3... More

I stayed at Star for 2 weeks. The personnel was always attentive and helpful. The room was always clean and well kept. Did't have problems getting around from the hotel. The local food at the hawkers was very good and although within the Geylang Area, did not feel security was an issue. I will recommend this hotel for budget travelers.

The hotel at the entrance was very clean. The lobby was dim with Japanese-style design. The room had the same Japanese-style, small but very functional. The fact that the sink was placed outside of the bathroom was quite inconvenient if you're travelling with not too close partner. The sleep quality was very good. I remember sleeping soundly during my 2-night... More

A little bit scared by the surrounding if you arrive in the late night. Good attitude of staff at reception counter. Room small but look clean. But some improvement on the cleanliness required as hair found around the rubbish bin, dust on the fridge door and stain on the bed sheet. Air conditioner quite noisy but functioning well. Free wifi... More

Staying in Geylang

Neighborhood Profile
Only a short journey from Singapore’s sparkling and polished city center, Geylang is a world away. Here in one of the least touristy areas of Singapore, visitors are privy to an unfiltered glimpse of Singapore life. On Sunday afternoons, migrant workers gather in Geylang to let off steam after a tough week. At the eastern end of Geylang Road, families and friends happily enjoy picnics. By contrast, at the western end, a more colorful side of Singapore can be seen, as street workers mingle with Sunday revelers in outdoor coffee shops. Take a friend, grab a beer and a local meal (frog porridge, perhaps?), and settle in to enjoy the show.
