The hotel was just like in the pictures. The area might seem a little dangerous but my boyfriend and I stayed there for a week and came back pretty late, nothing ever happened. I'd definitely comeback to the hotel even because it is close to an MRT station of the East West line, and by hopping one train you get... More

Prices versus hotel standard and this place gave good value for money in Singapore. Easy to find, clean rooms only 8SGD to the singapore flyer or suntec City mall. The only thing was the walls are thin, meaning it can get a little noisy when people are walking down the corridor. Wifi was good though and we were out exploring... More

The hotel room was very clean. I appreciated that it was located near a laundromat where I could do laundry. You can easily use public transportation to find the hotel. While it is true it is in a red light area, I never felt unsafe or concerned walking near the hotel. All hotel employees were very courteous and helpful during... More

I stayed at the place for 3 nights in July 2015 with my wife. The room was small and the bathroom was also very small (it was a with a window room). Air conditioning was working fine. Few Singapore channels were available on the TV. This is situated in Geylang area which is the red-light district in Singapore, meaning that... More

If you look at reviews for this area you will know it is largely the red light area, but you don't get any hassle. There are plenty of great places to eat and it's one of the cheapest places to stay in Singapore. The Hotel 81 - Star is a by far one of the better hotels to stay in.... More

Overall, Hotel 81 Star is the loudest hotel at which I've ever stayed. We were aware of the location being in the Red Light District, but weren't prepared for the hotel's promotion of the local business on Sundays. It might be best to pay a bit more and stay elsewhere if you plan to sleep during your Singapore stay. The... More

The closer you get to central Singapore the more expensive the hotels are. To get a reasonably priced hotel I had to go out to Geyland area. It is four stops on the MRT from downtown. The hotel is about a 10 to12 minute walk to the Aljunied MRT Station and then the train ride is about 15 minutes to... More

Location was a bit far off the main drag. Near decent hawker markets. Close to what I think were "happy ending" massage parlors? Good value for money, and for our quick stay in Singapore I would stay at again. Good service, small rooms, but everything you need.

First of all, this hotel is in Geylang area so you will definitely see lot of prostitute near by and brothels opposite side of the hotel. However, that wasn't a problem as I was staying for overnight and had a night flight to London. Stay at hotel was okay, small room but good enough. The next day I checked out... More

Staying in Geylang

Neighborhood Profile
Geylang
Only a short journey from Singapore’s sparkling and polished city center, Geylang is a world away. Here in one of the least touristy areas of Singapore, visitors are privy to an unfiltered glimpse of Singapore life. On Sunday afternoons, migrant workers gather in Geylang to let off steam after a tough week. At the eastern end of Geylang Road, families and friends happily enjoy picnics. By contrast, at the western end, a more colorful side of Singapore can be seen, as street workers mingle with Sunday revelers in outdoor coffee shops. Take a friend, grab a beer and a local meal (frog porridge, perhaps?), and settle in to enjoy the show.
