I stayed here recently and thought it was great. The hotel is charming and has a nice atmosphere, and the staff were all fantastic. The buffet breakfast was really good, with a wide selection. The hotel restaurant was good, though has pretty limited vegetarian options. The rooms aren't huge, but are nicely decorated and comfortable. The bathrooms are a bit... More

Beautiful hotel in a good location, that is walking distance from the train station. Our favourite thing about the hotel was the beautiful architecture and courtyard restaurant. It is a perfect place to relax after a long day walking around the old town. The rooms were charming but a little on the small side. The bathroom was very clean. Breakfasts... More

Amongst the few attractions that Yogya itself has to offer, this hotel should be ranked as one. The ambiance and friendliness of the personnel were immaculate and I wished the guest would have matched the class a little more. A few other things not, though: - Location: While advertised in Lonely Planet as right in the city center, you would... More

The feel of old town and Java tradition are so dense in the hotel; either it is in the hall, open space, even in room. Since I dislike such atmosphere, so I didn't enjoy such atmosphere. The food was delicious. The distance to city centre is not very far. The spa is good, very very good :)

The Phoenix is a hotel with an old world charm mixed with a truly Indonesia experience making it both elegant, with it's vast marble foyer, passages and beautiful architecture while also giving you a chance to immerse yourself in some of the Indonesian arts & culture and at the same time their unique way of doing things. The staff are... More

By far the best hotel we have ever stayed at. Three nights of luxury. The hotel itself is very like Raffles in appearance, the service is excellent and the food brilliant, especially breakfast. Wine is way overpriced, but that seems true of most of Indonesia and even Singapore. Staff are very friendly and very helpful. Unlike other reviews which favour... More

This hotel is good for either family or business trip. room is comfy. and lobby with heritage style . Various Indonesian foods can be found at breakfast time. Don't forget to try jamu - Indonesian herbal drink. i tried to get treatment from their spa, lil bit expensive, and they didn't give good service. no aroma therapy and even no... More

We loved this hotel. I stay in hotels all over the world for business. When on holiday I look for places to stay which are different from the 'faceless' hotels you find in most cities. The Phoenix is different. It has managed to keep much of its old world charm and character. The rooms were fine, breakfast great, staff very... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This legenderay hotel was initially built as private estate in 1918. Through the ensuing decades, the property changed hands a number of times, until a Dutch caretaker turned it into Pensioner Hotel. The Phoenix name was deliberately chosen by the last proprietor who hoped that it would remain intact forever, believing in the ancient myth of The Phoenix, the sacred fire bird symbolizing regeneration throughout eternity. The Phoenix Hotel is elegantly situated in down town Yogyakarta, the cradle of Javanese civilization. The legendary Malioboro Street is just nearby, while the world herigate Borobudur and Prambanan temples are only an hour drive. Yogyakarta's cultural heritage and picturesque settings emit a distinctive charm that seldom fails its visitors. The 144 beautifully appointed rooms are reflecting the ambiance of bygone era wrapped in modern comfort facilities, enabling its occupant to celebrate a glorious past without losing the beauty of contemporary living. ... more   less
