This "house of wonders" is truly amazing. The love for details, the professionality of the way the house was restored by Malik and his partner Norbert and the exquisite taste of the interior amazed us. There is something to discover every day in this house. Malik, you are a wonderful person and host and we thank you so much for... More

Baytil Ajaib is by no means a normal hotel. It's a truly unique way to experience Lamu - taking in both the rich history of the island and its sometimes eccentric modern character. The building itself is spectacular - an old Swahili mansion built by Arab traders set back in amongst the narrow, labyrinthine streets of old Lamu town. It... More

I travelled to Lamu solo. My arrival was dramatic considering I used a bus to reach Mokowe (the mainland). Bus delays made me arrive 3 hrs before the 2014 new year jump off. My idea was to be in Lamu by 6 pm! Nevertheless all that trouble was worth it. I was met by Evanson (Maliks gracious staff at Baytil... More

Imagine staying in a 400-year old restored Swahili home in the middle of a World Heritage site with the perfect host at a very reasonable price! I'm not really a beach person, so staying in the labyrith of Lamu City was perfect for me. My friend and I felt right at home, thanks to our wonderful host, Malik. It was... More

Arriving to Baytil Ajaib on the island of Lamu after working in Kenya was truly magical and it slowly unfolded over the five days of our stay. Malik our host was the essence of hospitality and took care of our every plan, calling his boat man or wonderful staff to treat us with care. The house is lovingly restored with... More

Malik (the owner of the hotel) gave us an unforgettable experience in Lamu. The hotel itself is a beautiful, restored Swahili house. The rooms are decorated immaculately with antique furniture and are exceptionally clean. And Malik is a great host who caters to every guest's needs and will even take you around town. If you want an very intimate, local... More

Lamu island offers nice restaurants and beaches, but the real attraction is the history and culture of this World Heritage Site. My apartment was painstakingly restored, beautifully furnished and exceedingly comfortable. Malik is a wealth of information and great fun. I will be back.

I spent 9 fantastic days at Baytil Ajayib and it was truly magical. Malik was such a wonderful host always making sure all expectations were met and often exceeded. The location was perfect, just a short little walk from the waterfront thru the intriguing walkways in the old town of Lamu. No cars, buses, or taxis and only the braying... More

This B&B is a large, renovated, traditional Lamu home with four separate apartments - each with its own outdoor sitting areas and day beds. Very private and furnished with rich mahogany antiques, fantastic limestone etchings, and handmade carpets, it feels like a trip back in time. The ocean breeze cools the rooms wonderfully and in the evening it is lovely... More
