We stayed at the Basma for three nights in March. They first put us in a "VIP" room up a steep set of steps on a hill. Do not, do not fall for that. Our room had a huge refrigerator in the hall that had been pulled out of the little kitchenette. The wires were still sticking out so that's... more

Do not under any circumstances stay in the rooms up the 95 steps unless you are trying to save money. They are terrible. View of Nile and Aswan is wonderful, though. Stay in one of the nicer rooms and walk up the stairs for the view. When the Cataract hotel reopens, I suspect that it will by far outstrip the... more

The position high above the Aswan islands is magical. Built around a well-kept pool, the Basma has immense appeal. However, we found the staff badly trained and in some cases even hostile. Our theory is that they avoided contact with guests owing to a poor overall level of communication with foreign guests. The food was unexceptional or even poor. more

This hotel needs a clean sweep. The foyer is cluttered with portraits, certificates, dusty potted plants, hideous blue old leather sofas and a large wheelchair ramp in the middle. The rooms are basic, the beds hard and the bathrooms need renovation. The benchtops were chipped, the lighting poor and bath stained. The restaurant is also cluttered and decorated with heavy... more

I liked our stay at the Hotel Basma. I found the rooms very comfortable, and the views from the hotel are breathtaking (see pics). The pool scene was also top notch -- I'm a sucker for a pool bar. The location at the top of the hill seems remote, but it really isn't we walked to dinner and the central... more

This hotel is located on a hill, and we ended up in a corner room with a nice view. I believe the rest of the rooms don't have as nice a view, but they overlook the courtyard. Being on top of a hill, the location was quite. We had lunch and dinner at the restaurant which was pretty good. No... more

I wish I had known how beautiful Aswan was; I would have spent more time here. Our room was on the very top of a hill which made getting down with the luggage a little difficult (they carried it up for us) but our view was fantastic. We checked in before our room was ready but they let us eat... more

We stayed at the Basma hotel for one night before our Nile cruise. This is a local hotel so it has nice touch of Egyptian decoration. The hotel exterior looks very nice and white. The pool is in the middle of the hotel, big and clean. There are a few stores below the pool level. Price was too expensive in... more

We had heard that most hotels in Aswan are of a below average standard since most people stay on their cruise ship and certainly this was the case for this hotel. My wife and I stayed here for one night as part of an Egypt tour. As experienced travellers in Africa and Egypt we are realistic about standards in the... more
