By any objective analysis, the Hussein is a dive. Dark, somewhat dirty, often low water pressure, lots of street noise. But that's not the point! The point is that the Hussein is brilliantly located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, almost on top of the wonderful Fishawy café and the late-night tea & dessert scene in Midan el-Hussein. (You get... in the middle of islamic cairo close to Khan el Khalil. Really basic a bit dirty, bad service - wouldnt want to stay here for more than just a few days, but a great location with balcony rooms overlooking the square with all kinds of things going on till the early hours. Its a shame that nobody is bothered to... More

I always stay in this hotel - several times over the last 10 years. True, service can be lazy and surly, the bathroom might not be spotless, but the ceiling fan works! The real gem is the balcony with chairs overlooking the Midan el Hussein, with mosque and tables and restaurants below, the best place to watch the world go... More

True, this is not a five star hotel, but what do you expect for under $20.00 a night with breakfast included..which is edible, a hard boiled egg, 3 bread rolls, butter, jam, piece of cheese and a choice of coffee or tea. Just pretend that you're camping out, at least you have your own toilet and shower. I always buy... More

First ask yourself a question .... are you adventurous, independent, not easily spooked, and able to tolerate cultural differences? If yes, then this hotel offers a chance to stay in the heart of Old Islamic Cairo and really, really, feel the essence of the city and its people. The El Hussein Hotel is situated directly on top of El Hussein... More

I chose this hotel because it is in Khan Al-Khalili and overlooks a lively square. The good: The room has a balcony that overlooks a busy square. At night, people sit at the shops to eat, drink and smoke. They brought their own musical instruments to play and sang through the night (till around 3am). I liked the music and... More

No argument that the location (Islamic Cairo) is great but believe it or not, the fact that the hotel is so dirty offsets the location advantage. The bathrooms are never cleaned (even after guests leave), there are no towels, and the floors are dirty. There were several cockroachs in our room. There was mud in the tub and the pillows... More

Okay it's not clean and the noise from the market below is so incessant that's it's hard to get any sleep, but this place is wonderful. There isn't a better positioned hotel in all of Cairo. Positioned right in the middle of the medieval Khan Al-Khalili market the nubian drummers play all night in the square outside and wails of... More
