Now that Rabaul town is being moved to Kokopo there is not much to choose from in Rabaul. The rooms at Rabaul hotel are dated but large. The bed was comfortable and the staff pleasant. The old Japanese bunker in the yard adds a bit of history to the place and you have to admire the owners for bringing the... More

Big hotel that must have been a paradise before the 1994 eruption. It is still the best place to stay in the region. We took the basic room and were lucky to be upgraded. It was probably one of the cheapest hotels we have stayed during our trip in PNG, and one of the two only hotels where we didn’t... More

If you go to PNG to live like a 1st world westerner, you are going to pay through the nose and you will be disappointed. But if you have experienced PNG for all the things that can go right and wrong, then you will realise what a great place the Rabaul Hotel is. We stayed in rooms near the back... More

Very disapointing considering the host is an enthusisatic and lovely lady. There was no hot water in my room and I was told I would be transferred into another room the next day. I had one cold beer and two not cold beers. I ordered a coconut cream curry prawns for dinner and was served the chillie prawns - couldn't... More

After doing a morning tour of Rabaul Town with the family from England/South Africa & friends from Australia, we decided to call in to Rabaul Hotel for lunch. Growing up as a child in Rabaul, I had very fond memories of the hotel & wanted to share this experience with our family & friends. In short, we were all very... More

Hello Tracey I am sorry to hear service was slow during your visit to the Phoenix Room in September. I see you did not make a reservation/booking for your large group and as you can imagine, as we are a small restaurant, if we are unaware of a large group visiting we cannot prepare the kitchen in advance or put... Conveniently placed to explore the hidden IIWW japanies bunkers, and relics, and to arrange a trip to mount Tavurvur, the last active vulcano nearby, we raccomand to spend a couple of days in Rabaul Hotel, the last existing memory of Rabaul old town, destroyed by the close vulcanoes few years ago. Big basic rooms, very clean, a bit expensive, but... More

Stayed here 2 nights, we were a party of 4 in two twin rooms. Interesting place! We came to Rabaul literally expecting a ghost town covered in dust... our guidebooks must have been out of date. The owner, a friendly Aussie lady is very helpful and will explain everything there is to do in town. If you want to chill... More

The Hotel is quite simple, but offers good accomodation ; which generally in PNG is not cheap. Staff is great over there , including the owner Susie :) They can help you to organise a local quide which is a great plus ; no internet though ( but that is common in PNG ); but airport pick up can be... The staff at this hotel are on the whole fabulous however the buildings and rooms are run down and grotty and require a complete revamp starting with a thorough scrub. The food at Phoenix restaurant within the hotel is fabulous on a good night and very ordinary on a bad night ... no consistency.

Thank you for your review. We do appreciated your comment. Rabaul Hotel is the oldest longest established Hotel in the islands region sprawling over 6 acres. It has remained open throughout 21 years of Volcano eruptions serving the community as best it can during some very difficult conditions. The sulphur emitted from the Volcano causes rust to any steel surfaces... More

If your going to Rabaul stay at the Rabaul Hotel. Had a great time, good bar friendly staff and the best food in PNG everything cooked fresh to order. The hotel has a pool which is handy in 35+ degree heat.
