I arrived in Hanoi airport and heard about the hotel scam the taxis drivers do so was on gaurd. After giving the taxi driver the hotel address he decided to take us to a different hotel which he had phoned up in advance so they were outside waiting for us waiting to drag us is and not give us enough... more

I was surprised to read some of the reviews! We had a great experience here. The staff were really friendly and helpful. They booked our tours to Halong bay and Sapa and definitely had the cheapest tour prices around. The rooms are basic but clean and enough room. Breakfast is included and we paid all of about $12 a night... more

I booked this hotel through the private website of City Gate before I left Australia, I normally would have booked it online at wotif.com but It wasn't on there and it was listed as one of Lonley Planets 'top picks' so we decided to give it a go. On there website there was one room that looked pretty budget and... more

The rooms are basic but ok (USD 15, or bigger rooms for USD 18, both incl. AC, -> Sept. 09). In Vietnam it's sometimes really difficult to find someone who is not trying to rip you off. But the staff at the City Gate Hotel is really trustworthy & very helpfull. They also help organise tours (Halong Bay etc.) or... more

I booked a room there for 2 nights after reading about that hotel in Lonely Planet. Was rather expensive (30 USD for taxi pick up at the airport and 20 USD / night for a rather small room), not great value for money. I think you can find much better in Hanoi as there's a lot of choice. Surprisingly enough,... more

Lots of the reviews already discribed are really true, so I only can tell you what happend to me 4 days ago. After chekking out the owner, Mr. Hung, followed me by motorbike (!!)b'cause I forgot to pay a can of beer which I consumed on the evening of arrival. He'd forgotten to put that can on the hotelbill. :)... more

When I got to Citygate via taxi from the airport, I was greeted by the manager like an old friend. He (Hung) showed me the room and I thought it was fine for the $15(US). I stayed for 3 nights and was very happy I stayed there. Hung said that if I got lost or got into trouble, just to... more

Like others who posted here, we wish we had read the overwhelming poor reviews before we committed to staying at this mockery of a hotel. And yes, we did indeed find the correct City Gate Hotel. The owner, Hung, is extremely devious, rude (especially rude for an Asian), and money grabbing. He subjected another Canadian couple to extremely rude treatment... more

PLEASE READ THIS -- I WISH I HAD KNOWN THIS BEFORE I ARRIVED! My husband and I stayed in Hanoi for 4 nights with the plan to stay at the City Gate Hotel in Hanoi Vietnam. Despite the Lonely Planet book warning us of copycat hotels, we thought we were sophisticated travellers and just fine. Wrong! When we arrived at... more

I have to say that I found the City Gate very enjoyable indeed. The manager 'Hung' gave me a reduced rate on a very large room ($8) which I found to be a 3 star rating. Excellent for the value. The staff were very friendly to me and never pushed any tours on me as Ive read from aother travellers.... more
