Booked in on return from Siem Reap to give time to reposition. Walking distance from night market and a mosque (and Fatima resto and its delicious burgers and lovely salads). Safe Garden Overpriced breaky at river-view resto Small room Inconvenient wifi sign-in Friendly reception staff Animal activists: two aquariums house two big fish that have overgrown their homes. I doubt... More

Faithful companion and I (me 71, her close behind) lodged her for 11 days in February at the start of two months independent travel in SE Asia. This hotel is an excellent value, particularly for the independent, self-motivated traveler. The hotel is located on the Ping River, just five minutes walk from the Night Market or Chinatown. The Old City,... More

I booked this guesthouse on the recommendation of a friend who has lived in Chiang Mai as an expat for many years. It is a little gem. Affordable rates, friendly staff who speak excellent English, the Galare Guesthouse is set on the banks of the Ping River. I booked one week initially and have just extended my booking for another.... More

We enjoyed our stay at Galare. The location was very nice and set back from the noisy streets of Chiang Mai. The rooms were fine and good value. Small garden available to guests. You can't go wrong here. One thing that really put me off though was that we arrived after a long day of travel and the first thing... More

This small older guest home is perfect for both young and old travellers. It is located a few minute walk to the night market. Plenty to eat and see there. Plenty of transportation options close to the entrance of the hotel. Small reasonably priced restaurant on site. Good free wifi. This hotel offers great value for your money.

Nice location, especially if you intend to visit the HUGE Chinese markets in Chiang Mai, or visit some of the many temples in and around the older part of the city. The location is right on the river and the guesthouse has a very large breakfast area (also doubles as a restaurant) that has tables under a large roof and... More

POSITIVES • A quiet part of town (important given the weight of traffic on the streets of Chiang Mai). • It is about 3km from the bus station and the tuktuk cost 120 baht (we tried to bargain and he wouldn’t come down). There is some parking on site – mainly for motorbikes. • A riverside setting – not a... More

Stayed here in January for 4 nights. It is on the river down a lane way, so it is out of the hustle and bustle, but only a 10 minute walk to Thapae Gate. Loved staying here, the room is large and there are lovely gardens to sit in, either on the river or outside the rooms. There are also... More

Yes, it's on a murky looking river. Yes, it's got squadrons of mosquitoes. And you're looking across at a very busy road , noisy and with lots of garish neon signs. There are no 'floating' staff. If you want a drink you must go and find 'the lady'. Why bother giving you a kettle with no coffee or tea sachets?... More
