Stayed at the Shanker Hotel as a part of a tour group recently - the hotel was reasonably comfortable and offered most standard hotel services. It also has lovely grounds and a swimming pool. The hotel was a quiet retreat being tucked away from the crowds, but was somewhat inconvenient when we wanted to head out to dinner (usually in... more

The Shanker looks great but it lacks the lustre expected of a Heritage Hotel. The buffet lacked choice, and very expensive. Overall though ,it was clean and I would use it again. more

We stayed at the Shanker Hotel as part of a trekking tour and then used this hotel as a base as we travelled about Nepal. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. THe gardens and pool were very inviting and lovely to have a little piece of heaven amongst the craziness of Kathmandu. The staff were helpful and... more

Stayed at this hotel as part of a packaged trekking tour. Was a nice old world hotel but I wouldn't spend my own money to stay there. Much better value for money elsewhere in Kathmandu in my opinion. Internet access and phone calls are charged at around 50x more than the price of a place 200m down the road. Breakfast... more

We spent two nights in this wonderful hotel at the end of our trekking to Annapurna Base Camp and we experienced a very pleasant stay. Rooms were of high level, very clean and comfortable, in this old palace transformed in a modern hotel, with a large garden and pool with every service. Service very friendly. Not very near to downtown... more

We stayed for around 4 days at the Shanker Hotel, the staff were very courteous and helpful and though the windows in most rooms are a little small, it didnt really matter as the long as the rooms and bath were spotless;beds were comfortable . The best part of the experience is that it was an old renovated rana's palace... more

We stayed three times in Kathmandu over the last month - at the Shanker, the Dwarika, and the Yak & Yeti. We wanted a hotel with character, but also with a generator for the frequent power outages. The Shanker was the best overall, because of the location and value for money. The room was fine, and service was OK. The... more

As you've read this used to be a palace, so bear that in mind when you are there. This wasn't designed as a hotel, so some of the rooms are odd shaped. The floors can be split level, the window might be small and other little oddities. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is very clean, the... more

There seem to be different room categories at this hotel, as we overheard some guests complaining about there rooms - and ours were absolutely fabulous well appointed guest rooms. Make sure to be on time for breakfast. We slept in on the first morning after our flight and were sitting by ourselves for breakfast with all the staff watching us.... more
