One thing a visitor will quickly notice when staying in Kigali is the prices are abnormally high for East Africa. Due to the various aid organizations stationed there after the genocide, prices have skyrocketed. Prices are typically double what is stated in guidebooks. Walking into Hotel Okapi is not the most uplifting experience. Signs greet you everywhere notifying you that... more

We arrived in Kigali looking for a value hotel, and found Okapi (after quite a few stops!). We opted for the lower priced rooms downstairs, which were very comfortable with TV, mosquito net, and small bathroom but nice hot shower. We weren't very hungry, but had butter chicken and some spring rolls for dinner which were delicious. Breakfast was interesting... more

I liked Okapi a lot and stayed there twice, once in the much nicer $60 rooms, once in the slightly overpriced $40 rooms. It's a great place to meet other travellers, and the service is excellent. more

I don't understand the good reviews about this Hotel. I visited the hotel in summer 2008 but the rooms are old and the environment is very noicy because of the construction work next door. Internet is very slow and the breakfast is not very nice. Management of Hotel is not very nice either I would not recomend this hotel. more

Stayed there for 3 days and told only expensive room available. Others afterwards seemed to check into the cheaper rooms. Anyway, before leaving I booked at the front desk for 2 weeks later and in a cheaper room. When I arrived they refused to let me stay in the room, although it was available (claimed it was too dirty for... more

We stayed on the top floor suite and it was a great value. It was in the back, so it was relatively quiet. The water was hot every day and seemed endless. The restaurant was very helpful, good food, excellent service. The front desk and owner in particular really showed us they cared. The owner went out of his way... more

We organised our stay at Okapi well in advance of our arrival to find out that Okapi was overbooked and placed our group in 4 different hotels in the city. After talking to the other hotel owners we found out that this is a tactic of the hotel owner - to overbook his hotel and then rent rooms in other... more

Unfortunatly my stay at the Okapi was less than brilliant. To begin with I was placed in an alternate hotel, something that was only admitted to when I said, this is not the Okapi. Fortunatly this was only for one (sleepless) night. The following day we were moved to the Okapi, but not to the rooms we had booked. Instead... more

I was in Kigali in 2006, and 2007 for work and both times stayed at the Hotel Okapi the staff really go out of their way to make sure you’re happy and well taken care of. The rooms are clean, but remember to ask to have the hot water turned on or you will get cold showers. The restaurant served... more

I and a colleague were in Kigali for work - meaning we needed someplace comfortable, reasonable and hassle-free. Okapi fit the category well - the rooms are spartan but clean, the staff speak English reasonably well, and the food was okay too. However, I did have an issue with the cockroaches - maybe because I stayed in the room directly... more
