I didn't end up staying overnight at The Base because I had to change my bus to Johannesburg. However: they let me shower for free and were very helpful in getting back my hoodie which I lost in a bus .... Amazing!! Have never experienced such a hospitality!!!

Stayed there for a couple of nights in mid-2010. Friendly and well-informed staff, international surrounding. Cosy and homey atmoshpere, with a neat view over the city from the terrace and the cherry on top - Leo DiCaprio's bullet-pierced jeep from "Blood Diamond" (shot in Maputo) standing right next to the hostel. The location is very central.

We stayed here one night before moving on to Inhaca Island. Arrived late but the staff were friendly and welcoming, just try to brush up on your Portuguese before arrival! The dorms were a bit shabby with faded and dated decor. Blankets smelt pretty bad so not sure when the last wash was. Wooden bunks which were fairly rickety. Shared... More

Location is very central and the staff were friendly, but the Base is rather rundown. The bathrooms were terrible, and it was very noisy outside at night so hard to sleep. Rooms were small and beds not overly comfortable. Overall, not a great experience.

We stayed at the hostel for five days in June and while the staff if great, the bathrooms are fairly disgusting. There are two (one has two shower stalls and a toilet, the second has one shower and a toilet). There is only hot water in the first, and only in the second shower stall in, the other two showers... I stayed at this hostel last August for a few days. Very simple with lack of hot water for showering at times. Definitely not a party hostel which was what I liked about this place. The staff members spoke English fluently and they knew pretty much everything that I needed to know about Maputo and whole Mozambique (Indeed, you make... More

Having stayed a night in fatimas (the worst backpacker place ever) we spent 2 nights here and it was so much better. Clean dorms and bathrooms, as well as a well equipped kitchen make this a great budget place to stay (to make up for the African prices, although it is the cheapest in Maputo) Helpful staff as well. Only... More

Very little to fault about this place. Location is very central, and perfect for walking around town. Dorms and all facilities are clean. Kitchen is decently stocked, with free tea and coffee. By Mozambique standards, it's very good - and reasonably priced (albeit expensive for southern Africa generally). I think the main strength is the staff. They're incredibly helpful, and... More

stayed here in dorm room for two nights. We liked the location, which is excellent, smack in the center. The balcony with a view, friendly receptionists, lounge area and a kind of trust based fridge system give the place a homey feel. Baths and toilets were clean, and not too crowded, and the walls were full of information on everything... More

We went here after a not-great experience at Fatima's, and WOW, it was so much better. Up to the standards of some of the best hostels I've stayed in. Nice dorm rooms, bathrooms. Everything was sparkling clean. There was a lounge to hang out in and even a washing machine. There was also a nice terrace to eat breakfast in.... More
