Best value of Maputos terrible backpackers. Friendly though amateurish staff. Clean but tatty rooms and showers. Good location and access to the sights Don't use their Tofo shuttle!!! Was supposed to leave at 5am, didn't until 8am. Try evil Fatima's shuttle. Fatima's rooms are a rip off and twice the price

Maputo is an expensive city of not very many options, and The Base reflects this. But Maputo is also a charming city, whereas the Base is merely functional and could try harder. It's an expensive backpacker option for what you get. The room included a rough grey blanket on the foot of the bed, an anaemic grey sheet, two pancake-flat... More

The Base would get one star if it were competing with the standard of hostels in South Africa, but compared to the budget options available in Maputo, it is not a bad choice. We stayed twice, as a stopover to and from Tofo beach. It was fine for that, with clean beds and options nearby for eating and buying supplies.... More

This is probably one of the more reasonably priced places to stay in Maputo, as accomodation is pretty pricy for what you get there in general. We stayed at the dorm for two nights, and were quite satisfied. It's clean, they got a computer you can use to get online, the location is central (there's a good indian restaurant right... More

We spent few nights there to visit Maputo and when we came back from the beaches north to Maputo. It is quite a nice place. Not sophisticated but good for backpackers. Staff was friendly and you can cook your own meal in the kitchen.

We stayed here 3 times during our visit to Mozambique for 5 nights in total in the double room. Small place and very well located for access to both the downtown and beach areas. Quiet area with restaurants nearby. Rooms, bathrooms and kitchen clean and well maintained. Staff very friendly and helpful - can book buses and taxis for you.... More

I didn't end up staying overnight at The Base because I had to change my bus to Johannesburg. However: they let me shower for free and were very helpful in getting back my hoodie which I lost in a bus .... Amazing!! Have never experienced such a hospitality!!!

Stayed there for a couple of nights in mid-2010. Friendly and well-informed staff, international surrounding. Cosy and homey atmoshpere, with a neat view over the city from the terrace and the cherry on top - Leo DiCaprio's bullet-pierced jeep from "Blood Diamond" (shot in Maputo) standing right next to the hostel. The location is very central.

We stayed here one night before moving on to Inhaca Island. Arrived late but the staff were friendly and welcoming, just try to brush up on your Portuguese before arrival! The dorms were a bit shabby with faded and dated decor. Blankets smelt pretty bad so not sure when the last wash was. Wooden bunks which were fairly rickety. Shared... More

Location is very central and the staff were friendly, but the Base is rather rundown. The bathrooms were terrible, and it was very noisy outside at night so hard to sleep. Rooms were small and beds not overly comfortable. Overall, not a great experience.
