We had organized our travels in Madagascar to stay for 5 nights at Mandrare River Camp, and we were so glad that we did. One or two nights are definitely not enough. Getting there takes some time and effort, as the roads are pretty bad, which makes the trip tiring. However we found the trip quite interesting. Everything about the... More

This is a gem of a place. It has everything - well located permanent tents with huge bathrooms; superb food; great guides; magnificent and unusual scenery , animals, trees, and culture to absorb. The baobabs and spiny forest were photographically exciting , as well as watching the ring tailed lemurs playing, and learning the ancestral culture. The location of the tents... More

We stayed at Mandrare for 3 nights and were really hoping it was worth the effort to get there. We had a very early start in Tana to get a flight to Fort Dauphin, then we were warned about the 3.5 hour drive to the camp, but we had just had three weeks driving in Africa so we thought it... More

My husband and I visited Madagascar in early October. Instead of standard itinerary, the travel agent suggested our staying at the camp for three nights. Honestly I hestiated, could not imagine my staying near the river side and myself surrounded by mosquito and insects, for doing nothing. Lucky that we went. The camp site indeed very comfortable, and thanks to... More

My wife and I stayed at Mandrare for three nights, and our days there were among the most memorable in our 4+ week trip through Madagascar. The camp is situated along the banks of the Mandrare River, and each of the tents looks out over the river. We were placed in the honeymoon tent, which is substantially larger and more... More

The peak experience in my wonderful first trip to Madagascar. October visit - a good time to go, the heat is not extreme and the lemurs have their babies. Everything about Mandrare is rare and special - Ed, Thomas, Gabrielle and their staff and guides go way beyond expectations in making your stay wonderful. The tents are comfy, with nets... More

Four of us were booked for three nights here but, because of logistical problems, only got to spend two nights at the camp. We flew into Ft Dauphin on the once daily Air Madagascar flight. We landed at 3:30 and were met by a staff member. We had opted to fly (a 35 minute flight) instead of drive (about 3... More

Good for: Tribal culture, Varied wildlife; Lemurs, Chameleons, birds, Baobabs and of course the amazing Spiny Forest. When to go: Honestly, I think any time of year would be good here! There are only 2 seasons: Hot, rainy season is November to April, Cooler dry season, May to October. Although the camp is closed from January through to the end... More

We spent Christmas here and we will never forget the effort the management and staff made to ensure that it was special, we loved the little spiny Christmas tree! We stayed three nights, the heat was pretty brutal, but the walks were unforgettable. Those lemurs...wow. And the spiny forest, the baobabs, and the friendly people. Such a unique place to... More

If you are considering an adventure in MAD, this destination is a must in Sept as it is full of grand excitiment. The lodge is nestled in a forest, the tent villas cozy and clean, excellent service and food-and did I mention the "food"......again, it was all super and and 4 days is a good choice.
