I also have mixed feelings on this hotel - on one hand they have everything you need (shops-restaurant-money exchange-room service-internet etc etc) but the rooms look VERY outdated. Think early 70's & bad taste at the same time... however, it is clean and bedding is clean if you remove the top quilts. Small Tv in room - was not working... more

Although rated as a 4-star hotel, the Ghion was a study in contrasts. Its central location made it easy to get around Addis, but its layout was confusing, with a bewildering array of accommodations options. The park-like setting was beautiful, but the single room was cramped as were the two single beds. Aren't many Ethiopians tall? Also, hot water in... more

Was astonished to be approached IN THE GROUNDS, IN SIGHT OF GUARDS, by pleasant teenager claiming to be off-duty bell-boy. Security at the main gate is so tight - visitors, taxis and drivers searched - armed guards etc. By the 3rd evening's chat, I felt safe enough to go with him by back gate 'for staff' to 'church, and free... more

We stayed here for 3 nights for $89 pn--booked via email. Breakfast was not good but lunch was very nice. We also ate at the restaurant on the top of the hill on the lovely grounds. It was wedding season in Ethiopia and multiple weddings took place in the gardens all day on Saturday and Sunday--quite a treat to witness!... more

Clean, basic 3 star hotel which is a reasonable alternative to the other pricey tourist-orientated hotels in Addis Ababa. Could be better if hotel was refurbished. PROS * clean, basic hotel with hot water * fast wireless internet in hotel lobby (when working) is approx $22 USD for 24 hrs * large rooms * reasonable prices for hiring local Ethiopian... more

Hotel responded quickly to my emails and confirmed room. US$110 per night plus breakfast. Despite 3 emails confirming flight arrival time shuttle bus wasn't at the airport for our arrival. We have also heard that some guests have turned up at the Ghion and despite the hotel confirming their room, when they arrived the room was gone. Was put in... more

Rooms vary from run down in the main block. more modern in the blocks by the pool and strange large suites for the same price behind the hotel. The main restaurant is okay--but the 'national food' in the traditional restaurant is worth a try--if you like really spicy dishes. The pool is huge--you have to be able to swim to... more

I traveled with a group and admit the experience varied. I personally had no trouble with my room, although some complained of water issues. The grounds are lovely. The restaurants are excellent. And, the onsite shops are reasonable. I always felt safe and well attended to. For the price, I consider it an excellent option. more

We stayed at the Ghion at the beginning and end of a two week tour of the South of the country and our opinions were shaped by the experiences that we gained during this period. Addis is no more typical of the country than the Ghion is of the various accommodation throughout. Both are relatively sophisticated and attract tourists who... more

The Ghion is a very dated hotel in much need of refurbishment. It is set in the most magnificent gardens and has a pool (although it did not look particularly inviting). The bird life in the gardens is amazing and the rooms have good balconies where you can observe this as well as listening to the sounds of the city.... more
