It's important to mention that Luanda is an astronomically expensive city. So accommodation tends to be horribly pricey and barely adequate. All this is true of the Pensao Caravela. A room there cost us $200 a night, including wireless internet and breakfast. The room was average at best and the bathroom was small and pokey. All this I could overlook, knowing Luanda is the way it is.
However, the Caravela is run by a terrifying Portuguese woman. She verbally abused her staff constantly while we were there and on one occasion we saw her hitting one of
them. Every morning we came down to breakfast to the sound of her screaming at her staff. One morning we decided to move from our regular table to avoid sitting in front of the air conditioner.
