I spent two nights in the El-Djazair on a recent business trip. True, as other reviewers have stated, the hotel (and meals) are overpriced for what you get. But there's a tradeoff, namely staying in a hotel that is literally steeped in history and, though faded in its glory, is truly lovely. My colleagues and I enjoyed wandering through the... more

This famous and beautiful hotel is a rip off. Their web page advertises beautiful perfect tasteful rooms with plasma/LCD TV in ALL rooms and other modernity’s for internet. BUT when you get the room it is old, cracked, looking faded and worn, with a ancient TV from the 80s and a bathroom which look like it has not been repaired... more

There’s something vaguely Soviet about the common areas of this hotel, but the rooms are nicer. The bedroom was an adequate size and clean; mine had a view of the sea and a small terrace. The lighting could have been better for reading in bed. Like all hotels I’ve been in Africa, there are no clocks in the room. The... more

After reading some of the bad reviews here I was very nearly put off trying the El Djazair Hotel but after a disappointing 2 hour stay at the Ibis ( these hotels are no more than an efficient minimal machine for staying a few hours in ) we managed to check in and were pleasantly surprised. The St George, as... more

I use to come to Algiers on business trip, and i tried this hotel...its nonsense, outside all luxe, but inside is a shame as a hotel. Everything on the rooms is very very very old, and even more, they are not serious. I´m just now writing because they put me in a room, and just woke up by the Disco... more

Stayed here in July, 2008 (15 days) and again in October-November 2008 (10 days). Visited the hotel, while staying elsewhere, in 2006. The visit was far better than the stays. The hotel is loaded with history, referred to in other reviews. The architecture, the tile, the woodwork and the gardens are exquisite and are well worth a visit. You can even... more

We booked Five nights and checked-out after one.....The property is expansive...the gardens adequately tended...traveller beware...pricing beyond expensive...upon our arrival we were aware that we were being charged nearly $300US plus taxes for a very standard room...since we wanted the experience of the old St. George Hotel we asked to see other rooms in various categories...in the end we chose a... more

This hotel may not be for everyone, but I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Algiers. It's set in stunning gardens, the common areas are beatifully tiled, and it's full of history (Allied commanders ran much of the WW II North African campaign out of here). The rooms are faded, but that's part of the charm. A few things creak,... more
