What is most remarkable about this hotel is that the visitor enjoys a pleasant, comfortable experience in one of the most intensely "branded" towns on the planet (the environs of Iowa State University) yet comes away from this venue without a clear idea of what that experience was. On the good, indeed admirable side of the ledger for this hotel... More

I cannot say we've actually stayed over night but we know this property VERY well. We've been pool club members for years and live very close to the Hotel. We eat at The Iowa Stater Restaurant in the Hotel frequently, and find it has excellent cuisine. Their breakfast buffet is not overly large, but plenty for anyone with nice variety,... More

We stayed at this hotel for a wedding last weekend. The room was large and very clean. The bed was very comfortable and the staff was very nice and accommodating of our early arrival. There was a beautiful area where the wedding was held in front of a waterfall. The large meeting room where the reception was held was staffed... More

This is my second stay at the Gateway. The rooms are large and comfortable. It is quiet and the beds and pillows make for a great sleep. The breakfast is pitiful buffet option only-- actually less options than at the typical Holiday Inn Express/Sleep Inn. The hotel staff is great and the location ideal. I didn't have a problem getting... More

Please, let me preface my comments by saying, it's quite possible I've been in about 1000 bars in my 58 years on this planet. We were at the Gateway for Homecoming at ISU this year. Never, ever, have I experienced a longer wait in a bar for a cocktail than in this place. Case in point: 15-20 customers in the... More

Stayed here for a conference and were treated very well. The beds & pillows were VERY comfortable. Plenty of outlets all over the room (executive). Built into the desk, on the table lamp and surprisingly there was a power strip by the bed which was really handy to both the sitting area and bed for my cell phone. I didn't... More

Larger property (for Ames), rooms are fine. Surrounded by green belt areas and set back from HW. Has full service restaurant, higher end prices. Breakfast high end. Lots of ISU pictures, hotel must serve as a meeting place for athletics with all the photo shots of school athletes. Good price for room - $89.

We booked a two bed queen in the tower. Yes this is an older property, but what makes it great is that the rooms are large and QUIET! It is not dirty either. We stayed here during move-in week at ISU and the hotel appeared to be full. Lots of people around but as I said before it was quiet... More

Stayed in the Gateway Hotel & Conference Center. We splurged and stayed in the beautifully appointed Atanasoff Suite: two rooms with a large bedroom, gigantic bathroom, separate sitting area, and a kitchenette. The decor is traditional with warm tones and leather furniture in the sitting area. It was clean (tho I did find a couple of minor "spots" on the... More

I was surprised when I initially saw all the negative reviews. I thought this was a good hotel conveniently located close to Iowa State. Pretty neat hotel with all the ISU decorations and pictures. My only complaints are about the breakfast, which wasn't free and was average in quality.
