This hotel / convention center is big, sprawling and the physical plant shows its age. However, to be fair, the hotel is clean, well maintained and comfortable. But, there hasn't been a major update in a while. We visited during December graduation and for several nights, we were among only a few guests in the place. There is no free... More

We stayed at the Gateway during graduation weekend at Iowa State and overall were pleased. The place is in pretty good shape with an attractive, welcoming lobby and public areas and the rates are reasonable...but unfortunately the experience involved some weirdness. The front desk guy said we were in the "executive" wing and told us we could just come in... More

We stayed here with our family and were very impressed by the hotel's staff, service, and amenities. The guest rooms are clean, the beds are very comfortable, and the pool was warm (unlike many hotel pools). Best of all, the nightly rate is reasonable considering the quality of everything you get here. The only thing I wish they'd do differently... More

We visit Ames frequently since our daughter attends college there. We have stayed at various hotels, usually trying to stay at some of the newer ones due to the fact that many hotels run down quickly. This trip we were forced to stay at the Gateway, which is much older hotel, I believe it was built in the 70's. I... More

You walk into a lobby area that includes the pleasant sound of water flowing over stones and such... to meet a very pleasant check-in person. Just one person (I never saw more than one) but that was enough as I was the only person checking in. When I asked if my original room was near the elevator (it was just... More

The Gateway is located just south of Hwy 30 and the Iowas State campus. The hotel had been recently remodeled and was neat and clean. Our "executive king" room was spacious and was as represented in the hotel photos. The bathroom was on the small side for two people getting ready at the same time, but workable, and there wasn't... Have stayed here for four years now as my husband attends a track clinic here in December. The rooms are very big and well maintained. We had an issue with the bathroom door handle and our tv and both were taken care of promptly. The staff is very friendly. The second floor where the clinic is held and where the... More

What is most remarkable about this hotel is that the visitor enjoys a pleasant, comfortable experience in one of the most intensely "branded" towns on the planet (the environs of Iowa State University) yet comes away from this venue without a clear idea of what that experience was. On the good, indeed admirable side of the ledger for this hotel... More

I cannot say we've actually stayed over night but we know this property VERY well. We've been pool club members for years and live very close to the Hotel. We eat at The Iowa Stater Restaurant in the Hotel frequently, and find it has excellent cuisine. Their breakfast buffet is not overly large, but plenty for anyone with nice variety,... More

We stayed at this hotel for a wedding last weekend. The room was large and very clean. The bed was very comfortable and the staff was very nice and accommodating of our early arrival. There was a beautiful area where the wedding was held in front of a waterfall. The large meeting room where the reception was held was staffed... More
