Pros: Pleasant and clean rooms. Good conference facilities and a full bar & restaurant. Nice room TV's. Cons: Aged frayed towels, certain outdated wallpaper and hotel design. No outlet where they place the coffee pots. Suggestions: Throw away old worn out towels. Move the coffee pot to the bathroom or desk near an outlet. Don't make the guest have to... More

We were in town for a wedding and stayed two nights at the Gateway. The room was large and pleasant, great king bed, and the staff were very helpful. There is no breakfast included with the room, however. In the summer, lots of young people stay in this hotel for team competitions and it was noisy well into the night.

I must say, I had high hopes.. nothing fancy, nothing out of the ordinary.. the property looked like it would be an awesome place to stay. I have to admit that the property was fine.. nothing fancy.. it was clean. It was spacious. But where I had the issue was with the hotel front desk. My elderly mom booked this... More

I come to Ames several times a year on business and stay at the Gateway whenever possible. Believe it offers the broadest line of service in Ames -- restaurant, bar, conference center. Easy to find off the highway and close to Vet school, stadium. The place is kind of dark and shows its age, but not too badly. Rooms are... More

I stayed here on business and it was a fine hotel. The bar was great, the lobby was nice, the internet worked better in the lobby than in the room so I spent most of my time there. The room was fine. I don't know how much this place costs, but it's probably overpriced. Great location if you have business... More

I stayed here for one night as part of a large group travelling through Ames. My room was fantastic! It was spacious, modern, elegant, and importantly, quiet. I would have loved to stay here in the summer to take advantage of the nearby walking trails. I'm surprised by some of the other reviews. Perhaps my room had been recently overhauled?... More

This hotel room was one of the cleanest rooms I've ever stayed in. I would have been comfortable hiring a lab to come do tests for bacteria. Wonderful job of cleanliness. My wife and I are very fussy and we were so comfortable and happy staying there. Front desk dude was also very well trained. Love this place. Will be... More

I recently stayed here while attending a conference. I stayed in a very nice room on the 5th floor. The room looked like it was recently remodeled. Everything was quite pleasant in the room. The bathroom did not appear to have a very good exhaust van, so the shower was quite steamy. The conference meeting room was nice. Nothing spectacular,... More

This hotel / convention center is big, sprawling and the physical plant shows its age. However, to be fair, the hotel is clean, well maintained and comfortable. But, there hasn't been a major update in a while. We visited during December graduation and for several nights, we were among only a few guests in the place. There is no free... More

We stayed at the Gateway during graduation weekend at Iowa State and overall were pleased. The place is in pretty good shape with an attractive, welcoming lobby and public areas and the rates are reasonable...but unfortunately the experience involved some weirdness. The front desk guy said we were in the "executive" wing and told us we could just come in... More
