The Grand Tikal is connected to a small shopping mall which sounds nice, but when you arrive, you realize that you're in a part of town that is pretty dingy and rough, and I've been to every corner of Latin America, and I did'nt want to walk outside this hotel. My wife and I were told by the lady handling the adoption of our son, that we needed to move to a b and b near the embassies, and downtown etc. --which was one of many gorgeous areas of Guatemala City--lots to do -very safe--world class restaurants--we were so disappointed we had missed 2 days of being there because the Grand Tikal experience was so depressing and dour. To add insult to injury, i approach the front desk and explain that we have been told we need to leave the hotel, expecting the person to charge us for one additional night, as is customary around the world, and it's only fair since our reservation was for 7 nites, so she says-no you'll be paying for the whole 7 days--regardless.
