First off for 135 a night we'd atleast expect a clean bed. When we walked into our room right off the bat you could tell it would be rough. I'm not sure if it was because of the colors that resembled the decorating of a color blind person or the 2 foot ledge out of the shower. The plumbing is... more

First of all, this was our first trip out to Catalina, even though we've lived in So Cal for over 20 years. It was very relaxing. I chose the Zane Grey based on reviews, as well as what's important to us, and here is what my husband and I thought. Pros: Awesome view that you will not get for the... more

My husband and I stayed at the Zane Grey on our trip to Catalina. Our room was called the Lonely Trails. The room was small with a queen size bed but clean and I just loved the decor. We had a Mountain View room which faced the mountains and had lots of greenery and it was beautiful. We didn't need... more

Definitely stay here when they have off-season rates. To me it wouldn't be worth on-season prices at all! Very basic and rustic, like a cabin. Nice, and only a two or three minute walk to downtown. Absolutely amazing views. I saw an oceanview room but didn't stay in one while I was there. It was nothing special, and was already... more

We only stayed there 24 hours and wished it could have been longer. We were greeted in a very friendly manner and taken to our ocean view room--it had the word Wheat in its name (all the rooms are named after Zane Grey books, I gather); Desert Wheat, maybe? What a view! The rooms are small and plain, the bathroom... more

We just spent 3 nights t the Zane Grey. No, you don't stay there---you use it as the jumping off point for your island adventures. This is the place for you if: You're OK with modest accommodations. You like to hike. You don't want all the amenities. The Good. The best views in town. Worn, but clean. Price. Quiet. The... more

We called the hotel and spoke with Michael the manager. He was very pleasant and helpful. We asked for The Call of the Canyon room based on a previous posting, but he said he'd put us in a nicer room: Riders of the Purple Sage. It was AWESOME! A private expansive view of the harbor and corner windows that let... more

I fell in love at first sight. The location, at the highest point on the Casino side of Avalon, is unbeatable. Trees obscure the Casino itself, but you have a panoramic view of the harbor, town and mountains from both shared terraces. I was lucky to get the Purple Sage room, which had three windows, two facing out over the... more

Okay, let's be perfectly clear - this is NOT a resort, and most would even hesitate to call it a hotel. It has less amenities than a Motel 6, that means NO TVs, NO phones, minimal staffing and the complimentary breakfast consists of toast and Sanka. And this is exactly why we love it - a true escape from the... more

I agree with the last reviewer - the booking staff is terrible, definitely the worst I've ever dealt with. They don't return calls and when you do Finally get a hold of them, they are not friendly. I'm hoping they'll read these posts and make a change. Otherwise, looks like a great hotel. more
