We really only had one issue with the hostel on our stay here. On the first night we arrived at the hostel after a long days traveling and were told we would only be checking into our room for one night and would have to check out at 10am and and recheck into out new room at 2pm the next... more

Washington DC is an expensive city, but this hostel is convenient, comfortable, and a real bargain. I've stayed here many times. Obviously, it's not for people who need a lot of privacy. But otherwise, it is close to perfect. Comfortable beds, sheets and blankets in excellent condition, free towel, large free lockers in rooms (bring a lock). Always lots of... more

I spent five nights here last spring and, for my purposes, it was perfect. Positive: the linens and blankets, and dorms in general, are spotless (they appeared to be new, at least when I was there). I stayed in an all-female dorm and my dorm-mates were very quiet and considerate women. There was a surprising age range - this is... more

This was probably the best hostel I have stayed at in the states. It is easily the cleanest anyway, the bathrooms were spotless, kitchen and rooms likewise. There was a large tv room with cable for chilling out, good sized kitchen, free wi-fi and readily available information. The location was prime for checking out all of DC's hot spots and... more

I've stayed here twice recently. I can't afford the $100+ /night that it costs to be in DC otherwise. I'd only recommend to people who are looking to save money. Good: It's cheap. Seems safe. Bad: The room I was in the first time (608? 408?) has a large wet spot on the floor by the air conditioner. The room... more

axsoned: Thank you for sharing your experiences. You make some great observations. First, I'll look into the wet carpet. That is something we can fix straight-away. Next, is a topic near-and-dear to many travelers: our free Wi-Fi. "Erratic" is exactly the right word to use. The good news is that by the end of the month, we should have the...

Having never visited the US or stayed in a hostel previously I was rather apprehensive about our group staying here. As it happened, I was very impressed. As the previous comment states, it's very clean, in a good, safe location, near the Metro and there are good shops (inc Macy's) within 10mins walking distance of the hostel as is Fords... more

sunbatherUK: Another newbie to the joys of hostelling! We are so proud that you chose us for your first hostel experience, and ecstatic that we made a convert! We can't wait for you bring more young people to HI-DC to introduce them to the welcoming world of hostels! ~ Mark Schneider, General Manager HI-DC

This was my first stay at this Hostel, The front desk service was excellent in my opinion, I even had to change my room because I did not want a Top Bunk bed because of knee problems, they happily accomodated me with a different room. The Elevator is very slow but why are you in a rush if your on... more

Steffknee: It sounds like you have a wonderful vacation! And we're so happy you were able to meet new people from around the world. That's the biggest treat of all! A quick note on inexpensive, neighborhood eateries: We have several low-price options within three (3) blocks of the hostel, including: all-you-can-eat Indian food ($8), all-you-can-eat Chinese food ($8.50), hot sandwiches...

Because I was arriving in DC close to midnight, I didnt want to spend a couple hundred dollars just to lay my head down overnight, so took a cue from my kids and booked a room at the hostel. I reserved a 4-bed all-female room (requesting a lower bed). Desk staff was very professional and pleasant when I arrived. I... more

mosaiclady: Welcome to the world of hostelling! I'm so glad to read that you and your children enjoy the community spirit (and let's face it, the lower price) of hostels. The experience you describe is just what all of us at HI-DC would have wanted. Thank you very much for walking us through your stay. Next time, maybe you'll take...

By now, ive lived in a few hostels and theres really not much going on at this one. Very very few activities. The elevator doesnt work during half of my stay there and takes a long time to go up and down so most of the time, everyone takes the stairs. Its not a very big hostel. Every floor only... more

randomjean: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. For the other readers out there, I would like to provide some more detail around a few points. It is true that we generally have one (1) or two (2) activities per day: often a tour in the morning and/or an evening activity like a Pasta Night,...

I wasn't sure what to expect from a hostel having not stayed in one since a school trip 10 years ago but I was pleasantly surprised. This hostel was very clean outside and had a massive HI flag outside. The overall feel is that it is basic but it was very clean. We had key cards for our dorm and... more

surf_girl81: So glad for your "happy surprise!" Honestly, I don't have much to add. One thing is that people from outside the US can become Temporary Members (as you described) after only 6 nights. The other thing is that at our free breakfast, we serve toast and bagels (with peanut butter, jam, cream cheese, and/or butter), muffins, fruit cocktail, 6...
