We booked the backpackers resort as we were a little unsure of the Portage due to mixed reviews on trip advisor. However when booking our water taxi for Queen Charlotte Track the taxi company told us the backpackers had been bought by Portage Resort. We arrived tired and wet after 28km walk and the reception staff were lovely. The backpacker... more

Not resort standard. Poky, noisy rrooms, not overly clean. Staff appeared disorganised, the impression was of poor management. Staff at the Snapper bar were the most helpful. Certainly a nice spot but not for the price. more

We stayed here in November 2007 for two nights as part of a three week tour round New Zealand. Our room was one of the standard rooms and was more than large and comfortable enough with a fantastic view of the sound. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly despite it being the start of the season and... more

What a stunning journey to get here via Interislander Ferry & Water taxi. Stayed in room number 5....incredible views, large outdoor decked balcony overlooking Kenepuru Sound - far better than our friend's bridal suite! Very simple, contemporary take on rustic chic. Lovely staff, good quality food. more

We attended a family wedding in the Portage resort and stayed for 2 nights. The staff related to the wedding were brilliant, very attentive, professional and even with the unexpected rain on the wedding day, they managed the situation very well. The staff serving breakfast were not so good, the breakfast took over half an hour, probably closer to 45mins... more

The category above doesn't quite address how we felt. Actually is was overall not good and if we had been able to decamp like the Aussies (see other review) we would have. Stayed for 3 days over Xmas on an expensive (for NZ) DBnB package - hotel seemed quite full. Possibly as a result of that timing there was a... more

We arrived on a dull overcast day to an equally dull grey resort. The room was very average for the price $275.pn We selected this room for the view. Great view but a tilt of the head to the right from the tiny terrace and we had a superb view of the car park which had a constant stream of... more

I'm tourleader for a Danish travelagency. I visit The Portage with a group of older people. And they loved it. The service was good with wonderful food. The rooms (standard) was nice and clean and the view over the sound was wonderful, it's a perfect place to rest a day or two during a 2-3 weeks New Zealand roundtrip more

I had actually booked the entire resort for my wedding after needing a place that could host and sleep 100 and in that location. We went last week to check it out and I cancelled my booking the next day. We stayed in the $275 a night luxury suite which is their top room. It was in the middle of... more

Management response from
Portage, Manager

The Portage has welcomed guests from New Zealand and overseas for 120 years. We host more than 15 weddings each year and have always been known as a wonderful place for celebrations. We are concerned that a number of the items raised in this commentary are incorrect. These guests actually spent $646, not $750, on their one night stay including...
