We arrived early for our one night stay and Gabrielle immediately took us to our room. As everyone mentions, the rooms are very large with king bed. Decent kitchen facilities and small table and chair set along with large sofa, second large chair etc. so lots of room to spread out. We had booked a 2nd floor room but found... More

Thank you for your comments. Yes we do upgrade people if we are able (and they are nice people like yourselves) Always a nice surprise :) Most people love the sun streaming in, for the afternoon but sometimes the glare from the water just at the wrong angle can be a little blinding, but lovely to sit on the blacony... This was our last motel at the end of a wonderful month in New Zealand and a perfect ending . David was so welcoming on our arrival and and showed us to our room which has a great view of the bay . We relaxed on our balcony to a perfect sunset before eating in a restaurant recommended by David... More

We drove into Akaroa in the early evening without a booking and sought accommodation in the first motel we saw after parking our car. By the greatest good fortune it was the Criterion Motel. We were given a large downstairs room with a diagonal view of the sea which we thoroughly enjoyed over the 4 nights of our stay. The... More

The 2 owners of this motel could give lessons in hospitality, they were so warm, friendly and ever so helpful. The room was so spacious which we appreciated when seeking refuge from cyclone Lucy. King bed very comfortable and a lovely outdoor patio was great the next day when the sun shone to have a drink and take in the... More

Thank you so much for your comments. It was a difficult time with power outages etc and everyone just mucked in and made the best of it. It certainly was good to see the sun the next day and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay, Once again thanks and we hope you will return to our lovely town... More

Perfect spot for a stay in the charming small port of Akaroa which, nestling between vaguely Côte d'Azur hills and with its French history, seems to be a delightful forgotten slice of the South of France before it became ribbon development. We spent two nights at the Criterion, perfectly situated in the centre of town. The room was very comfortable,... More

Wow you make it all sound so romantic. Thanks for all the compliments and Mista thanks you too. He takes his job very seriously, all the meeting and greeting of customers. Mind you he has been doing it for 11 years now.:) He is very experienced. He has been doing the job nearly as long as us. We are really... More

We spent two nights here at the end of a recent tour of NZ and can recommend the motel for its proximity to the delights that Akaroa has to offer. However, there had been a mistake with our booking and we had to be given an alternative room, which was the one designed for disabled access, which meant some of... More

We are sorry you did not enjoy your time here. There was no confusion with your booking. We upgraded you to a sea view room when you had only booked a standard room without a sea view as the person in the standard room had asked to stay another night. If there was a smell in the room you should... More

I was surprised and delighted by the Criterion. Describing itself as a Motel, it is more a set of large studio apartments with balconies facing the sea. The huge bed was very comfortable, and the sofa and chairs added nicely to the usefulness of the place when the rain closed in without making it cluttered or cramped. The whole suite... More

Lovely rooms and a great reception from the lady who was looking after the place... This location is really great and only about a five minute walk to the main shopping part. We were however behind the 4Square supermarket and were woken both mornings before dawn with trucks unloading goods for the shop. This is one of those things that... More

Thank you for your great comments. Yes our minder is lovely such a gracious lady. Sorry to hear the milk truck woke you up delivering the bread and milk but you are right.
