My husband and I booked this hotel without knowing anything about Budapest and where the central location to stay is. We were very lucky in booking with Astra! It is on the quiet Buda side, near supermarkets, banks, restaurants and Batthyany Ter station (only couple minutes walking). This station links you to anywhere in Budapest in no time! The location... The hotel seemed fairly basic but the room was absolutely massive with a huge bathroom. Big windows overlooked a little courtyard which was very quaint. The best part of this place is its location. It's accross the river Danube from Pest, but at the foot of the Fisherman's palace, which is a marvel. Other sites are easily accessible from a... More

This is a pleasant, very clean, old fashioned hotel convenient to the river, old castle area and centre of the city. It's a little hard to find because it's on a side street with a tiny sign so make sure your arrival taxi knows the address. Although very dated the rooms are comfortably furnished. It's a bit like staying with... More

Miniscule soap provided (we purchased our own). Only hot items in buffet were toast and coffee. Heater/AC had a mind of its own. Buzz in/out procedure inconvenient. Cash only o.k., but if pay in Euros, only paper currency (no coins) accepted. Older desk person very unfriendly almost to the point of rudeness (probably due to language difficulties--not his fault). Good... More

We stayed here in August for for 4 nights. The hotel was comfortable and cosy, specially our room trat seems a dinig-room, with wood-ancient furniture, but lovely and cosy. Breakfast was quite good, except the omelettes... they don´t know how to cook this! The recepcionist, Mark, was efficient and hepful. Best of all is the location, near Batttany Tér tube... More

We stayed here for three nights this July and were quite satisfied with the hotel. The oddest thing though - the pictures on the website somehow make the rooms appear smaller than they really are. We had a room on the first floor (it's pictured on their website) but when turned up we were told that it wasn't really a... More

We stayed three wonderful nights at Hotel Astra in April 2008. The hotel is situated in one of the most perfect locations in Budapest. It is in the Buda Castle District right below the Fishermen's Bastion, Matya's Church, and the Palace. It is a very charming, quaint hotel dating back to the 1700's. It has all the modern conveniences, but... More

This is a really tough review to write...mainly because had i paid a different price i think my idea of this hotel would be a lot better. I ummed and ahhed alot about which side of the river to stay on and which hotel to pick and in the end went for the Astra because it was smaller and the... More

This is the type of hotel others should aspire to be. All hotels no matter where you go begin to look and feel the same, anonymous bland and cold. This hotel is different. It seems like you are staying in a friends house. The rooms are big and spacious with "real" furniture that you would possibly put in your own... More

The current reviews on Tripadvisor for this hotel are somewhat mixed, but I have to say that it is one of the loveliest hotels that I have ever stayed in, and I have stayed in very many. It's small, compact and charming. I found all of the staff very friendly and willing to help. My room was wonderful - spacious,... More

Staying in District I / Buda

Neighborhood Profile
District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.
