I recently stayed 2 nights at this hotel as part of a cycling tour I was on. The hotel is within a castle, so it's old and the rooms have lots of character. I liked my room -- and I had decent views from my window -- but it wasn't very clean. There were lots of cobwebs and there was... More

Charming hotel in a great location to use as a base for other travels and day trips to surrounding areas. Great service, comfortable beds and rooms. Daniela is a wonderful host and extremely helpful in securing reservations to one of the local wineries. Beware though, you are staying within a very small hamlet. Another reviewer said it best, "in 5... More

This is a 10-room inn located in a castle (which hosts probably the only truffle museum in the world) with a first class restaurant. We had a two room suite with a modern, clean bathroom. We used La Locanda del Castello as our base for visiting Siena, Montelpuciano, Pienza, and so many other places. Daniela is the host and she... More

Lovely hotel in a very quaint tiny Tuscan hill-top town (in 5 mins you will have seen it all) Rooms are in good condition (not recently renovated but still very clean and respectable) Owners are extremely helpful and accommodating Hotel restaurant is very good (larger than the hotel would need and attracts clients from a wider area) with lovely outside... Small hotel located in a restored portion of the castle. San Giovanni is a small quiet town - with few dining options. It is therefore a real positive that the hotel restaurant is seriously good. Dinner there, hosted by the owner - was exceptional. The rooms are, as expected on the small side, as are the bathrooms - but they... More

We stayed here at the beginning of June for 4 nights at the end of our Tuscan trip. A very lovely little hotel in a quiet town about an hour away from Siena. A great base for visiting Montepulciano, Cortona, among others, its a lovely place to come back to at the end of the day. The restaurant below is... More

San Giovanni is a calm town with wonderful gardens therein. The Locanda is a welcome addition in the area. I stayed there again recently and enjoyed my stay. Staff was welcoming and helpful. I recommend it highly and would return. A couple of things though - and bear in mind I am VERY particular about lodging - my shower could... More

We stayed in La Locanda for 5 nights, planned to spend half our vacation there and half in the north of Toscana. We could not leave the place. Charm, silence, views that attract every avenue to beauty you might have. In a place which is small enough to feel remote though still in a small viallge. The food and restaurant... More

We stayed at La Locanda del Castello from October 8th through the 11th. It is a lovely hotel, small with only 8 rooms, ideally situated in the Val d’Orcia for access to the Tuscan wine country. Daniela the manager was so helpful in the weeks leading up to our visit and when there she set us up for a productive... More

My husband and I stayed at La Locanda del Castello for two nights in July 2012. Recommended by a work collegue, the place truly lived up to its billing! Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Looking for a Hotel and a Restaurant in the heart of Tuscany south of Siena, in the middle of the three renowned wine districts of Chianti, Montalcino and Montepulciano, and set inside the unique and unspoiled landscapes of the Crete Senese and Val d’ Orica ? LA LOCANDA DEL CASTELLO is the answer. Is a XVI century building which has been recently restored into a small hotel in the ancient and peaceful hamlet of San Giovanni d’ Asso, celebrated for its famous white truffles. Just outside the village there is the wonderful garden “Bosco Della Ragnaia” created by the American artist Sheppard Craig. The territory is rich of history, with many hamlets, castles and abbeys to discover; rich for its natural hot springs with the chance of relaxing yourself in spas and spoiling yourself with massages and beauty treatments. Moreover if your Clients likes to do sports while on holiday, there is the chance of going horse riding, trekking, biking or have the wonderful experience of admiring the area from above on a hot air balloon. Not to forget the gastronomy experience this territory is able to offer: the Clients may visit some of the many wineries of the region and taste it’s famous wines, in addition to the other main products of the area such as olive oil, cheese and truffle; and if they are willing to know more about the Tuscan food they may choose to take cooking classes in order to be able to remember the flavors of our region once back home. The Hotel LA LOCANDA DEL CASTELLO offers 9 rooms all finely restored and divided in the following room categories (3 standard, 3 Superior and 3 Suites). All the bedrooms are provided with a matrimonial bed and a bathroom with shower and hairdryer, a/c, satellite TV, telephone, mini-bar, safekeeping box and free wi-fi internet connection. The suites have an extra sitting area for relaxing. The restaurant LA LOCANDA DEL CASTELLO is located on the ground floor of the building, which once housed an olive press. It offers its guests the genuine flavors of traditional Tuscan cooking. Amongst its delicious specialties are the local white and black truffle (we also organize special truffle hunting), pecorino cheese, Senese salami, honey and saffron, with a selection of the most well-known Tuscan wines. In the warmer weather, one can eat outside in the small hamlet square enjoying the atmosphere of the old village, or alternately in the comfort and shade of the back terrace. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further information you might need. ... more   less
