James and Richard have transformed a large 19th home into a comfortable modern house, but have retained the charming features of the old building. The furniture is also in the style of the old building itself. For instance, our room was large with a lovely chaise longue. But contemporary features, such as underfloor heating in the bathroom speaks of modern... More

When you stay at somewhere like Te Puna Wai lodge, you are reminded of the charm that is lacking in the pod-like 5 star hotels. Nelson is very beautiful and to have a place which captures and frames the view and captures the changing light made us feel very fortunate. It is a real home and you feel like you... More

We stayed at Te Puna Wai on recommendation from someone we had only just met! Glad we did. We hadn't booked but the guys were only too happy to make up the room for us. We felt very welcome. The haul ashore apartment was nicely furnished and had everything we needed. Enjoyed the conversation with Richard and James. Definitely coming... More

We were thrilled by our stay at this wonderful lodge. Our hosts, James and Richard, were fantastic conversationalists and made us feel like long-lost friends immediately. The lodge has an amazing view over the water, where we were treated to two fabulous sunsets. Breakfast was nothing less than gourmet. Wish we lived closer so we could enjoy this experience more... I can only echo comments already posted here. Te Puna Wai Lodge is a lovely place to stay; it is well-positioned, comfortable and has great views. If that isn't enough for you (and it should be!), Richard and James are terrific hosts - they are interesting, helpful and knowledgeable. They provide a sumptuous breakfast too.

All the previous reviews describe how beautiful the rooms and views are and the great breakfasts and advice on the area. What is amazing is how both Richard and James treated us a old friends. Richard has an extraordinary breadth of knowledge and interests which he shared with us, including old Maori history and legends. He had information about a... More

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at Te Puna Wai 2 weeks ago on our way to a fishing lodge in New Zealand. It was amazing! Richard and James have done a great job remodeling and decorating this historic house. We stayed in the first floor apartment, which is large and comfortable. A big part of how wonderful... More

Magnificent views, lovely old building, excellent decor, well appointed, good location and two superb hosts in Richard and James, who were both interesting and well travelled. This was reflected in the eclectic mix of accumulated items on display in this, their abode. The best accommodation we experienced in New Zealand. Hard to nail it down to any one thing, it... More

Our two stays at Te Puna Wai Lodge are among our most cherished travel experiences. Comfort, elegance, generosity, and good taste are among the words that first come to mind to describe the approach of James and Richard. We stayed for two nights and wished it had been a week.
