What a pleasant surprise! Having not booked ahead, we could not find any accommodation in Oamaru and we were lucky enough to find this little gem just a few minutes out of town. Very quiet location with lovely gardens and amazing hosts. Ken and Sheryl were delightful and we felt right at home. The spread for brekky was awesome! We... More

Stayed again at Ranui Retreat, this time for 5 nights. We keep going back. Sheryl and Ken give such a warm welcome and are great fun. And Sheryl's cooking is sublime. A great place to stay to look around Oamaru and to explore the surrounding coast or country. The Pondings at nearby Bourton on the Waitaki River are a great... More

"Can a second visit ever live up to the promise and excitement of the first? It can. It DID! The accommodations at Ranui Retreat are every bit as lovely as we remembered and our hosts Sheryl and Ken as generous and friendly as well. The surprise this time was joining them for a potluck supper with some of their friends... More

Our second trip to this B & B and well worth it. Excellent furnishings and a very warm greeting that made us quite at home in NZ. Their tour of their upcoming olive oil harvest made our stay very personable. They made sure to let us know of the best restaurant nearby for our dining requests.

We wish country and quiet B&B, not city center. By rent car, it is easy to access.

Be prepared for a gorgeous experience. Sheryl and Ken are artists, and their work adorns their house and gardens. Ken's mosaics are visible on the bathroom tiled floor and garden paths. Sheryl's amazing fabric art is exquisite, from the comforter cover on the bed to wall decorations, lampshades, and pillows in the living room. Breakfast was delicious, with homemade preserves... We re-visit Ranui Retreat each time we're in NZ and for several nights, which says a lot. The self-contained room has a fantastic bedspread made by Sheryl. Ken and Sheryl are fun hosts and Sheryl's cooking superb, so consider the DBB option. Steam Punk Exhibition in Oamaru was amazing.

We received a wonderful welcome, were made to feel very much at home, and were shown to our very comfortable and beautifully colour co-ordinated "lavender room." There was a queen size bed with a wonderful hand made bedspread and many other artefacts made by the owners. We were able to roam the lovely gardens, and really felt as if we... More

A lovely home in rural setting, 10 kms from Oamaru, perhaps the most under-rated city we visited in New Zealand with its beautiful Victorian gleaming white stone buildings. Our room with private bath was spacious and comfortable. Our hosts were charming and offered us good advice. We will always remember the antics of the tiny blue penguins..
