We picked Pen-y-bryn Lodge as our stop over in route to Christchurch from Queenstown. It was raining so we didn't want to go through Lake Tekapo and not be able to see anything. Plus, we didn't find any lodging in Lake Tekapo that we wanted to stay at. Pen-y-bryn exceeded our expectations. We were the only guests due to being... More

The lodge is a charming old house with a lot of space, room with a fireplace to sit with the other guest for a drink, also with the hosts James & James, late in the afternoon and dinner/ breakfast in another large room. Dinner/breakfast is also with the other guest. Dinner and breakfast is very good. There is also the... More

Thank you for your review! You might be interested to know that we have begun work to expand three of our other guest rooms so that they will not only be larger than the one you were in, but will also have super-king beds (as our Park Room does now), which might be more suitable to guests who prefer a... The Pen-y-Bryn is a beautiful property and well-maintained. The hosts are friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed visiting with them by the fire one evening. You certainly won't go away hungry from breakfast; what a great selection and all homemade! If you choose to have dinner you won't be disappointed!

We were there for a business retreat. We were well looked after without it being intrusive at all. The Lodge is beautiful and it was lovely and quiet there so we could concentrate on what we needed to get done.

Our stay was all too brief in this marvellous testament and memorial to good living, good company and hospitality. Staying in the main house was definitely a step back into history. This should not be taken as implying any lack of luxury but rather the ambience of the period. The rooms had been restored with care and a fine eye... More

We're so glad you had such a good time--we really enjoyed having you with us, and to see you enjoy your Sichuan-style meal so much! We hope that your onward journey was uneventful--the weather forecast did not look too promising, but we hope that all... More

The hosts were very friendly and gracious and the main house was beautiful and atmospheric. Bedrooms were small but comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. So no complaints from us about what we received, but having stayed in many many accommodations in NZ across all cost levels we felt that Pen-y-bryn was a bit overpriced, hence our overall rating... Thank you for your review of your stay. We're very glad that you found your stay comfortable, though you found us to be somewhat expensive. We do not deny that there are other, less expensive, places to stay in Oamaru. But we would like to point out that if you compare our pricing with that of other Qualmark-rated "New Zealand... More

The atmosphere, sense of details, the amazing antique collection, beauty of the garden, or maybe the perfect diner, difficult to choose which one made us feel so good in that place. Thanks a lot "the James"

My wife and I stayed at Pen-y-Bryn for 2 nights. We stayed in the Victoria room, which is in the main house. The house itself is absolutely stunning, just being able to enjoy its grandeur was a great experience - beautifully furnished in period style, and adorned with artwork from around the world. Our bedroom was small but comfortable with... More

We had a wonderful wedding anniversary at Pen-y-bryn last week. The James's made us feel so at home we shared pre-dinner drinks & dinner with other guests, sat fireside and enjoyed the ambient surroundings of this stunning home. We were charmed, you will enjoy your stay!

Stayed here one night on a trip up the East Coast of NZ South Island. The hosts - the two James', who are American ex-pats - were engaging, informative and helpful, arranging premium seating tickets for the penguin viewing. We did not schedule dinner (our mistake) but had canapés and a glass of wine with them before dinner. Breakfast -... More
