This is not your standard B&B - it is of the highest quality, a luxury B&B. We were greeted as we stepped out of our car by one of the hosts - both hosts are named James. He assisted us with our luggage, gave us a tour of the Lodge and was a font of local knowledge. The focus was... More

From the moment we arrived, nothing was too much trouble for the two Jameses. From the initial tour of the house, the adoption of a baby blue penguin, the recommendation to take an alternative route to our next destination, the delicious breakfast etc, etc. Our room was on the small side, but plans are afoot to extend 3 rooms this... Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us! Indeed, work is currently underway to extend three of our five guest rooms, so we will soon have rooms of a much larger size to offer our guests. Take good care of your adopted penguin! More

We visited Pen-y-bryn on a chilly Oamaru evening in April and were welcomed by the Jameses (James Boussy and James Gluckman), owners of this beautiful-preserved heritage-listed home. Wreathed with landscapes gardens, which supply the home's own kitchen, Pen-y-bryn is a labour of love that's ideally suited for travellers looking for homely hospitality and gourmet food (cooked by Gluckman) in the... Thank you Nick for your review! The days of all our rooms being essentially the same are indeed now over, as our Garden, Nest and Park Rooms have been significantly expanded (triple their former size), with each room now offering a super-king bed, sitting area, larger en-suite bathrooms (with both a shower and a bath) and TVs. We cannot wait... More

From the moment we pulled up to this incredible home we were hooked. It is certainly a charming building with colourful gardens (despite that lack of rain) and quiet areas to sit and reflect. But the secret to Pen-y-bryn is the hospitality. We were greeted at the door so warmly by James and then given our own tour of the... More

I don't ever remember staying somewhere where the owners are so attentive and thoughtful. Not only were we provided with memorable and comfortable accommodation in a grand historic house, James and James prepared and served us a superb dinner with a menu specifically designed to satisfy preferences of their guests. After dinner conversation was fascinating; sleep was restful; breakfast was... More

It was a pleasure to have you stay with us, and we're so happy that you enjoyed your visit! If you're ever in the area again, we'd love to have you back so we can show you all the changes that we have in store for the three "annex" rooms this year--we hope it will really knock our guests' socks... We stayed at Pen y Bryn one night. We were looking for a special place to stay and wanted to see Oamaru and the blue penguins. The Lodge is a delight. James and James take special pride in making all guests at home. The Lodge is an elegant old Victorian house that has been updated but retains its old world... More

Thank you for your review of your stay with us! While we also are very fond of the two rooms in the main lodge building (the Victoria and Elizabeth Rooms), the three rooms in the annex (Park, Nest and Garden Rooms) are about to undergo a huge expansion and renovation that will make them by far our largest rooms. Perhaps... More

Leafing through the memories of my last year trip to New Zealand one word comes to mind remembering our stay at Pen-y-bryn Lodge - REMARKABLE. We arrived to Pen-y-bryn pretty late at night. The time of the day did not sop our hosts, James Glucksman and James Boussy, from greeting us at the door, showing around and making sure that... More

Our hosts, James Glucksman and James Boussy, greeted us at the door upon our arrival. This very personal touch set the tone for the remainder of our stay. The lodge itself has many luxurious public rooms including a billiard room, library, and drawing room. There are beautiful gardens (thanks to James B), terraces and a verandah to enjoy. James G,... The house is a huge victorian heritage listed building, tastefully renovated, one feels privileged by being able to walk through it. Our bathroom showcased the original tub!
