The house is a huge victorian heritage listed building, tastefully renovated, one feels privileged by being able to walk through it. Our bathroom showcased the original tub! If you want to feel like a lord for a few days, this is the right place. The gardens are beautiful, full of flowers, such a pleasure walking through them. You MUST have... More

We stayed for only one night, unfortunately, as it was such a memorable stay that we would have loved to be able to extend, but were on a tight schedule as we travelled through New Zealand. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted warmly by James and James into their beautiful 1889 Victorian mansion. This historical house is located amid beautiful... More

...at least that is how you will feel after your stay in this beautiful Victorian mansion built 1889. We booked the Park room in the annex for our honeymoon and have not been disappointed. James & James have renovated and refurbished the mansion but stayed true to its historical charm. If you are looking for a design hotel with minimalistic... More

Thank you for your review of your stay with us, and for your comments about Oamaru and the surrounding area as a place to visit. We are glad you were able to make such good use of your time here and explore the area. The room you were in (and the two others in the Annex building) should be expanded... More

The three nights that we had at Pen-y-bryn were a highlight of our honeymoon in New Zealand. The house and surrounding gardens are beautifully maintained and it is the perfect base from which you can explore Oamaru and the surrounds. The hosts, James and James, are wonderful and are what made the stay so enjoyable. They suggested great day trips,... More

We picked this out as a one night Birthday treat on our way through to Christchurch. The hosts, James and James were both thoughtfull and eager and able to help plan our one day. The room we had was in the annex, and was very comfortable, and clean, and inclued all that you would expect in this class of accomodation.... More

We stayed at Pen-y-bryn Lodge at the beginning of our honeymoon and it did not disappoint. From the moment we booked James and James contacted us to see if there was anything they could do to make it special, including any special requests for dinner (which was served in a separate room to other guests). We were incredibly exhausted after... More

Posting this review on behalf of my parents, who thoroughly enjoyed their stay at Pen-y-bryn last night. They left Oamaru for home this morning, replete after a lovely breakfast and still raving about the marvellous hospitality of the Jameses, and the small yet thoughtful touches that made all the difference (for example; the bed turned down and complete with ‘hotties’,... james and james have turned this beautiful house into simply the best b&b in the South Island. the term b&b sells it very short. we arrived here giving 24hrs notice after a huge drive from the north island. they prepared a 'wee snack' for us - incredible. too delicious to describe the treats so I shall post a photograph instead.... What a beautiful lodge! Attentive and expert hosts (James & James); wonderful historic introduction; every item of food explained in detail and baked/cooked on site from fresh produce; Hard to ask for more. This is a Lodge concept, where you can stay and dine there if you give the hosts notice. We were recommended this location by a travel advisor en route between Queenstown and Christchurch. Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay with us! We definitely encourage our guests to consider Pen-y-bryn to be their home away from home during their stay, and to use all the nooks and crannies of the place to their heart's content (though trying to move the billiard table is definitely not recommended!).
