The Lodge itself has beautifully appointed rooms where every detail ensures that guests' needs are fully catered for. James and James are perfect hosts, providing a relaxed and luxurious environment, and the most delicious menus for breakfast and dinner. Being located at Oamaru, this is a great place to stay on the way back to Christchurch. Viewing the blue penguin... More

The two James have created a delightful, "luxury lodge" from a historic mansion located in Oamaru. These welcoming hosts provide personalized service, a wealth of information about the history of the house, and local places of interest. Our large room with sitting area was on the upper floor. The room was newly renovated and well-appointed with full wifi, nice bathroom... More

We stayed in the beautifully appointed Garden Room in this historic and lovingly maintained luxury lodge. James 1 and James 2 were exceptional hosts who attended to all of our needs and shared with us the history of the house. We had gourmet breakfasts and dinners throughout our stay, and thoroughly enjoyed every meal---including the lively conversations with other guests... More

We are so happy you enjoyed your stay with us Cynthia, and that you were pleased with the Garden Room, which is one of the rooms that we recently expanded and renovated. You certainly made excellent use of your time in Oamaru, and we loved hearing your exuberant stories about all that you saw and did during your outings. We... More

Our visit was pleasant, clean and interesting. James gave us the talk about the history of Pen-y-bryn and showed us around. They have built extra rooms on the grounds and we stayed in a huge room.. all clean but found the steps up to the bathroom a bit troublesome when it was dark and I had to get up in... More

Thank you for your review of your stay with us. As you mention, we recently renovated and expanded three of our five rooms, including the one you stayed in (The Nest). We took your comment about the need for a nightlight seriously and have installed one at the top of the stairs leading from the bed area to the bathroom... More

This lodge is set on a hillside overlooking historic Oamaru. This is a wonderful place to stay, if for no other reason than the food. The place is owned by two expat American guys, one of whom is the chef. Not only does he fix a delectable breakfast, the dinner meals are amazing. The lodge is a home museum, with... More

Thank you for your review, and for your compliments about our cuisine! As you know, we love turning the vegetables from our garden, and all the produce from around Oamaru into meals for our guests, and we're really happy you enjoyed what we presented to you! More

What amazed us and knocked our socks off about this place is how unexpectedly brilliant it turned out to be. On the outside, it is a beautifully elegant and cosy, yet simple place. Inside - it is anything but simple or ordinary. The hosts, James & James, are exceptional. Particularly James Glucksman who speaks 8 languages including Mandarin, which we... More

This is as close to perfection as you will ever find, we had the Park Suite and it was fabulous. Read the other reviews as they cover everything, the welcome, the house and its history, the rooms, the food, the service, the tourist advice and the hosts. Thank you both James' for looking after us so well, you seemed to... More

We are so thrilled that you enjoyed your stay with us enough to write such a touching review! We are also extremely happy that you enjoyed the Park Room so much; we put a lot of thought into how we would remodel and expand that room, along with its neighbouring Garden and Nest Rooms, and are really happy that guests... This is a beautiful restored old home that a tour guide recommended. It is beautifully decorated and includes many pieces of artwork. The lodge owners even have a booklet explaining the history of the artwork. I stayed in a room in the annex, "The Nest", which offered views of the town and the ocean. The grounds are also lovely. James... More

This is not your standard B&B - it is of the highest quality, a luxury B&B. We were greeted as we stepped out of our car by one of the hosts - both hosts are named James. He assisted us with our luggage, gave us a tour of the Lodge and was a font of local knowledge. The focus was... More

From the moment we arrived, nothing was too much trouble for the two Jameses.
