We stayed here only because we flew into Christchurch late and wanted to put a few on towards Queenstown that evening--not a destination point per se. Old hotel with some significant refurbishing. We had a large semi-suite (slight upgrade but reasonable)--large spa tub, separate sitting area, great bar area, modernistic in decoration but acceptable. Hotel has at least 3 of... more

This little hotel was as expected. Clean and comfortable with everything you need. We were in one of the refurbished room and it was just fine. My only issue was the uncomfortable bed - but that is to be expected at small motels. The staff were friendly and helpful and it is the only place in town to get dinner... more

Fun to stay in a historic building. We enjoyed our time. Our room was very nice... and very big as well. Bathroom was very big and spacious as well. A nice flat screen TV also. The wireless internet was efficient and reliable - for a small fee. The breakfast was fine - but I think it would have been better... more

The historic hotel is in a beautiful building, well located. The room we had was in the tacked-on modern section, pretty unremarkable and not the cleanest place we stayed. 5 minute drive to the Blue Penguin colony (why we came here...they come in after dark and it gets chilly, so dress warmly). Staff was helpful. more

Stayed here one night while visiting Oamaru to see the blue penguins - they are extremely cute. That said, there's not much that is cute about both Oamaru and the hotel. We stayed in a single room in the older part of the hotel - huge mistake. The bed was terrible and the room was very small. The bathroom was... more

We chose to stay here based on the location, easy access to the Victorian Heritage Day activities, and the "romance" of staying in a hotel extant since 1890s or so. On arrival Saturday afternoon, no staff was present whatsoever, but one busy waitress in the coffee shop. We waited ackwardly for a full 30 minutes with no sign of life... more

We had a superior queen room in the older part of the building, which had originally been two rooms which meant we had a good lounge area and generally a good amount of space for a town centre hotel. Our room faced west which meant it got the sun in the evening and with no air-conditioning is was necessary to... more

The reason to stay here, it's in the middle of town and, if you like, you can walk to the blue penguin place. Kind of maze like to find your room and got a room with two beds. more

We found ourselves having an extra unplanned night in Oamaru and booked into the Kingsgate. The reception staff and all other staff we encountered were professional and polite. They could teach their big town neighbours in the Heritage in Christchurch a thing or two. Spotlessly clean rooms - everything working and all at a very reasonable price. Sure, the decor... more

I stay at this hotel on a regular basis as part of my work as we overnight regularly in Oamaru. It is quite common to have repeat business guests at this hotel staying as I noticed when staying here. The rooms are modern and are of a clean standard. The bathrooms are a little dated, but fully functional and clean.... more
