The pantry area was very cosy. It makes small talks and interaction with other backpackers very comfortable. This place is small, with limited shower rooms and cooking area. Nevertheless, it is clean and well equipped. It was raining heavily on that day. Luckily, this is a hostel comfortable enough to just stay indoors and let time pass by :)

With a name like birdsong how could you go wrong? Rooms are named after indigenous birds. It's on the main road about 2 miles n of Hokitika. This in itself is a gem of a town worthy of a visit. Centre of the soapstone (jade) industry. Birdsong is run by Kerry and Neil who have definitely put their own mark... More

this was a lovely hostel to stay in, the owners have gone to a lot of effort to make sure it definitely has a kiwi feel! the kitchen and lounge were clean and cosy, with great facilities. the only downside was that we were given the room right at the front of the house, which was practically right on the... We really enjoyed the stay in Birdsong. Our room was awesome! We had a double bed with a balcony with ocean view. The bed was freshly made and everything was clean. Also the bathroom was clean and there was a hairdryer you could use. The Hostel was quiet. Also you could walk to the glowworms, it's not far away. We... More

We stayed a night here and it was a very nice stopover. The bathrooms were probably the only draw back on the stay. They were ok, but kind of felt a bit strangely put together. The toilet and the shower are in the same room with a partition separating them. So, with one person in the shower and one in... More

We arrived quite tired and it was such a nice relief to find a very clean and tidy place with a room that had a little balcony with ocean views. The owners have really put effort into making you feel welcome and the place has real character. The kitchen was nice to cook in, and being just out of town... More

The hosts of the Birdsong Backpackers were amazing hosts. They provided all types of information about what to see and do in and around the area. As well they provided plates of homemade cake or scones in the evening for all the guests to partake of. The rooms, bathrooms and especially the kitchen were spotless and this only encouraged guests... More

really well run hostel with a friendly and very helpful owner, clean and lots of kitchen and storage space. On the night we were there it was poor weather but all staying had plenty of either peronsal space or an opportunity to swap travel stories.

We had such a lovely stay here - Neil, the owner, is so friendly and makes a point of showing you around and suggesting things to do in the area which we haven't found at every hostel. The kitchen is very well equipped and the living/dining area has such a charming set up, with a roaring fire on a cold... More

We stayed here in 2012 and this time was just as good if not better, we had a double room, "spoonbill", which has a balcony overlooking the ocean. Neil and Kerry are fantastic hosts who cannot do enough for you. The kitchen is great with everything you could need. The artwork makes for a lovely environment and cosy feel. All... More
