The hosts of the Birdsong Backpackers were amazing hosts. They provided all types of information about what to see and do in and around the area. As well they provided plates of homemade cake or scones in the evening for all the guests to partake of. The rooms, bathrooms and especially the kitchen were spotless and this only encouraged guests... More

really well run hostel with a friendly and very helpful owner, clean and lots of kitchen and storage space. On the night we were there it was poor weather but all staying had plenty of either peronsal space or an opportunity to swap travel stories.

We had such a lovely stay here - Neil, the owner, is so friendly and makes a point of showing you around and suggesting things to do in the area which we haven't found at every hostel. The kitchen is very well equipped and the living/dining area has such a charming set up, with a roaring fire on a cold... More

We stayed here in 2012 and this time was just as good if not better, we had a double room, "spoonbill", which has a balcony overlooking the ocean. Neil and Kerry are fantastic hosts who cannot do enough for you. The kitchen is great with everything you could need. The artwork makes for a lovely environment and cosy feel. All... More

One of the very few times our experience is completely different from the TA.com consensus. we stayed at Birdsong mainly because of the high rating by TA.com reviewers - one review in fact from the same room we stayed in. First the positive - nice location across the main road (SH 6) from the beach; nice big shared kitchen that... More

Comfy beds and cosy dining area. Lucky to be there and someone was baking muffins to share! Friendly people. The walk to the Glow Worms Dell is short and it was a memorable experience. Happy to stay here for a night after hours of driving from the lower South. I actually missed spotting and turning into the hostel initially. Do... More

Beautiful hostel, perfectly decorated with the bird theme (each room has the name of a bird and is decorated accordingly, the salt and pepper are birds, etc), everything is tidy and cozy, in winter the fireplace is on every night, in summer you can hang out on the few decks or in the garden. There is even a bushman bath!!... More

We arrived at the Birdsong hostel in the dark and pouring rain after a tiring drive from Kaikoura and were warmly welcomed by the owner Neil. We stayed in the penguin room which was a spacious ensuite room with a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. The kitchen/communal room were well equipped and warm with a cosy wood stove... We stayded in a double room, which had its own kitchen. Room was clean and nice and we were able to park the car right next to our room. Only downside was that we had reservation for a sea view-room, but the sea was behind a tall bushfence, big road and about 100 meters of grass, so we were nowhere... More

Sorry to hear that you did not get the upstairs room which you booked. Please email or telephone us in advance next trip, we will ensure you get the room with private balcony and ocean views, hopefully with a beautiful sunset and a complimentary fresh baked afternoon tea! More

- Far from the city - No free wifi - Friendly staff - Free bikes - Good beds - Clean - Small hostel - Enough equipement in the kitchen - A bit boring for the young travelers, good for the older ones - Stayed 1 night - I won't be here again
