We rented a beachfront chalet during a recent visit from my relatives to the South Island. The chalets are located on the beach which is great, but they are certainly a descent distance from the center of town. Unless you have a car or are happy with a lot of walking, the chalets may not be the best choice. The... more

We had a 2 storey chalet that had a master bedroom, living & dining area downstairs & a little upstairs bedroom with 2 single beds for the kids Airconditioning cum heating was excellent. Everything was new & well maintained. The beach setting is great. The little animal zoo was a hit with the kids, especially at feeding times. There's a... more

We stayed here for one night to break the journey. The chalets are very well equiped and right on the beach. Because the accommodation is about a mile from town, we decided to buy some food and self cater for the evening meal and breakfast. I did not notice anywhere on site to eat. The sunset over the sea was... more

stayed 2 nights in march as used it as a base to go down to the glaciers. Very good value for money, liked the beachfront chalets, farm animals and trampoline for my son. Great sunset views from the beach. As self contained unit accomodation at the price range of $130/night, I would not recommend anything else in Hokitika. Glow worm... more

I believe we stayed in Room 7 (facing the sea - but not exactly seeing the sea). There's a small sheep pasture between the deck and the Tasman Sea, which obscures the view a bit. Never-the-less, access to the beach was easy - and we greatly enjoyed the sound of waves coming ashore from the deck. The room was very... more

Needed a 1 bedroom unit for 3 adults. This was really wonderful. The beachside site was fabulous. Kitchen excellent, surround sound system and the bed in the lounge for our 3rd adult was a Murphy bed that pulled down from the wall when needed. Very new, clean, lovely patio - out the gate to the beach. We had the best... more

We stayed in unit 9, a two storey log cabin facing the beach. You can't actually see the sea from the cabin because it's obscured by a grassy bank, but it's no more than a few yards' stroll to the pounding west coast surf and endless sandy beach. For two of us the accommodation was very spacious. The bedroom is... more

The compact but nicely formed chalet was less that a minute from the beach, and very close to the glowworm dell, but a 5 minute drive into town. It was well equipped and homely, although the bathroom was small. The unit was great for 2 of us, but it was meant for a family and would have been a bit... more

We stayed at the ensuite cabin which looks out to the compound's 'zoo'. there's the Illam, ducks, pigs, sheeps, chickens etc (don't worry, these guys don't make much noise)And just beyond this animal park is the beach. everything's just at your doorstep, what more to complain about? Plus, even though the train tracks runs by the compound, I didn't hear... more

The Shining Star Beachfront Accommodation complex is generally lovely - the log cabin effects that mean your whole accommodation smells of fresh wood, the beachfront location, the animals, the proximity to the glow-worm dell. etc. are all great. Our cabin was really spacious, well laid out, and with excellent quality furnishings and facilities. However, what we would otherwise have rated... more
