after a long driving day from picton to greymouth, we came to .... heaven on earth. warm, wellcoming, clean and friendly. we were 2 tired mothers with 3 hyperactive teens. while the mothers settled in the lovely room (one double bed and a single wide comfortable bed), the boys went to the free kayaking having lots of fun. supermarket is... more

After working six months in Antarctica I traveled New Zealand on the way home for a month of R&R. We stayed only in Backpackers (similar to hostels) and found many we enjoyed. Global Village was one of our favorites. LIKED: Everything! The communal areas were great. Kept clean, and the staff politely reminded everyone that the areas were to share.... more

Global Village backpackers is much nicer than many hotels I have stayed in, with beautiful decor and immaculate facilities. The bedrooms and bathrooms were perfectly tidy, the lounge was gorgeously cosy and the kitchen was a really high standard. Lovely little touches like hot water bottles were the perfect accompaniment. We stayed in a 4 bed dorm and the big... more

we stayed at this hostel for 4 nights in april, and out of all the hostels we stayed in all over new zealand this was probably the best. fantastic decor, themed from accross the world. super friendly owners. very clean. internet was a bit slow, only real downside! had a beautiful lounge area and garden. free kayaks and bikes. its... more

We were only looking for somewhere to lay our heads after driving up from Franz Joseph in the afternoon before taking the lunchtime train to Christchurch the next day, so we didn't really give too much thought as to where we stayed, but simply chose the highest rated option from the BBH guide. Our luck was in! We had a... more

If your into the rasta vibe, this place is for you. Its wonderfully laid out with may different levels and places to chill. But to make this place what it is, its décor is something special. its got a very rootsie, africian feel to it which i love. but its also clean and quite. Our room was spacious and had... more

This is the best backpackers I've ever stayed at! From the moment I arrived I felt like I was part of some great big worldly family - everyone there was so chilled out and happy :) check in was easy and my room (a double) was lovely. Small, but still enough room for my luggage, and was decorated beautifully. The... more

This hostel is hotel quality - it is absolutely beautifully decorated and well laid out with lots of balconies and sunny areas, as well as a cosy lounge and TV room. The kitchen was well stocked with adequate sinks and stoves etc. The bathroom was very clean. Our room was lovely - quiet and comfortable, with a view out to... more

I booked this hostel two weeks in advance. Imagine my surprise to arrive and find I had been given the worst room in the whole place. No introduction by the man who took my money, just "Your key should be in your door and the room is down that corridor, up there is the kitchen and bathrooms". Terribly unfriendly! At... more

Disgusting service received upon arrival from middle aged grey haired man at reception. i arrived with my elderly mother, we had booked a room in advance. When asked if we could see the room first, this man told us rudely NO we couldn't, and when we told him that we had had some bad experiences over the last few days... more
