Not sure why, but I didn't read the reviews of this place before booking here. It's a real step back in time, but not in a good way. This place hasn't had anything done to it since the 1970's, except there are now flat screen TV's in the rooms. Wifi isn't available in the hotel, even for a fee. You... More

I have stayed at the Greymouth Kingsgate twice in the last month, the new menu is really good, and is great value for the price. Some rooms are a bit dated but overall not too bad. Wifi is very expensive and way overpriced, the first 30 minutes should be free. You can however get the very good local Greymouth newspaper... More

This hotel is very average. The decor is dated and once you leave the foyer, it does smell like an older hotel (slightly musty). But it is clean. Our shower was blocked in our room and when we rang reception, she had a poor attitude ("What do you expect me to do about it?") But with encouragement from my husband... More

I was impressed with the room, breakfast and service we had on a weekend special, using our Superannuate's Gold Card, as well. The room was very clean and comfortable and may have had old fashioned decor, but for the cost ( for Bed and breakfast) was very good value.

We did the awesome Trans-alpine train rail trip but was spoiled by the worst hotel experience. Hotel room was outdated maybe last updated in the 70's. Breakfast was below average. Scramble eggs represent more a custard serving because they used powdered egg. I was slapped with a $25 internet fee for free internet usage. Next time will not use this... More

Road tripping around the South Island of NZ, stayed in more 5 other hotels during my trip. The kingsgate wins the wooden spoon as absolute worst hotel experience. How you might ask? Unfriendly, unhelpful and rude staff at reception. Oh and their 'free' wifi is capped at 30 mins, from the second you log in and runs out and that's... More

We stayed in several motels throughout NZ and this was hands down the worst. Tired, rooms, terrible bathrooms, paper thin walls, receptionist couldn't manage a smile, wifi ridiculously exy. If you stay here, don't waste your money on the breakfast buffet. Such a waste of money. Eggs were powdered and horrible, coffee Undrinkable. The gentleman who worked at the bar... More

IT SMELLED SO BAD... SO BAD.... MUSTY... I did not sleep whole night due to the smell. I had to use my scarf to cover my nose. The room was really dated. The bathroom was like 30 years ago style. The heater in room never heated up and noisy. Staffs rude - We had reservation for dinner at 6:15. We... More

The staff are unfriendly and need to be taught the basics of customer service - eg smile! My room rate included breakfast. It was disgusting. The scrambled eggs appeared to be powdered eggs. The boiled eggs tasted like they had been on the boil for an hour. The room I had was right on the edge of the courtyard for... More
