We stayed at LEL for two nights while touring through the Northlands. Upon arrival, we were greeted by David and Polly. They gave us a quick tour and gave us some good advice regarding local activities. Each morning we were awoken by the birds in the trees and the crowing of the rooster. A pleasant change from the noise of... More

After having stayed in over 50 hostels during my last around-the-world trip, I can easily state this is one of the best I've booked. First, the location. Located on a side road away from the center of Whangarei, you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Yet, the Abbey Caves are right next door and you have groceries, restaurants,... More

Lovely place in the middle of nowhere, just a few minutes walk from the abbey caves and its glowworms. Rooms are clean, spacious and of very high quality, not the usual cheap and uncomfortable beds and furniture. Owners were lovely and gave heaps of tips and recommendations. The caves are worth a visit, especially if you are put off by... More

We had a very lovely, although just too short stay in this nicely designed, well maintained, clean and friendly hostel set in a quiet and relaxing area. Wish we could stay there longer. Would recommend to anyone.

Planned to spend 1 night then eventually stayed 4 nights... The place is amazing with stunning views around. It is very green and peaceful. Clean rooms with independent beds, beautiful decoration. The hosts are always keen to help in any way. From there you can easily access to 3 caves (Abbey Caves) : you can directly hire a headlight and... More

My niece & I stayed for one night only, but immediately felt at home in this very clean, comfortable, and relaxing hostel. I am so accustomed to staying in 'backpacker-style' accommodation but this was just lovely in every respect. Highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who loves to be close to walks and birds but also wants comfortable & clean... More

We have stayed here before and enjoyed the lodge and the lovely bush setting. As other reviewers have noted, this place is something special. The sound of moreporks (ruru) at night are fantastic as are the songs of tui during the day. New owners David and Polly are extremely friendly and are doing an absolutely wonderful job. The lodge is... More

Dave and Polly were wonderful hosts and we felt welcomed and at home from the moment we arrived. The room was immaculate and the view was breathtaking. We were thrilled to discover that there were numerous caves with glow worms just a short walk from the property with equipment available for rent, (one of the highlights of our trip). Tom... More
