Reception was closed upon arrival, with a sign reading 'If reception unattended, go to the bar next door.' The bar was a public bar complete with half drunk workers. We stood at the 'unattended' bar for a few minutes, wondering where the bar person was. Eventually, she got up from the table of drunks she was drinking with, to attend... More

Its right smack bang in the CBD, my fave bar is downstairs, the rooms are low priced but come with everything I need to enjoy a night away. never a hassle too book a room, and always get pleasant service from the staff at bar when booking. The rooms arent huge, but the showers are GOOOOOOD,better than the one in my... More

Shabby, smelly and dirty. Even staying in the room the Queen had slept in in 1953 was no consolation, as it hasn't been decorated since and hardly cleaned. Was booked for me by someone who didn't read the reviews prior.

I was a bit dubious when I read there was carpet up the walls but its been renovated and the carpet is now where it should be. The staff are lovely particularly Neville who sorted me out with a bike to ride so I could see lots of the town during my short stay. The bed was comfy and the... More

Ok I can put up with the worn out carpets, shoddy decor and general disrepair, but after a long journey I really wanted a hot shower and to contact family through email................ We had no hot water for showers and there was no wifi when mentioned to the staff they did not care. Total rip off This is 2014 not 1914

According to their site all rooms have tvs. This one didnt. Also the radio didnt work as it had no ariel. Be careful as there is a night club below which goes on till 2am. Not the best and definately not cheap at $120 a night

One thing to keep in mind is that this is a Grand Hotel. So dont expect the latest mod cons in your room or hotel & you wont be let down. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here & will be back again. Yes the decor is tired, but the high ceilings, grand entrance & stairs added more character to the... More

You can tell this hotel was once a grand affair. You can indeed imagine Queen Elizabeth having once stayed & walking up the grand staircase to her room. The staircase along with the accommodation quarters I saw are worn and tired. The staircase carpet is thread bare in places & the velvet red curtains in my room have discoloured over... More

I agree with a few of the other reviews...was not a good experience from the moment of arrival. Was a mis-understanding re booking this place (someone else made the booking for me thinking this was my place of choice; it wasn't however mis-communication was what got us there) and the moment I had to walk into the public bar I... OK...so it's cheap, I get that $55 for a single room for the night, but even for that, it should be clean and it isn't. I dare not look at the mattress which feels rather spongy and am a little terrified of pulling the bed covers back. The bathroom has chipped tiles on the floor and it generally feels grubby....
