Overall a good solid backpacker lodge, right on the riverside in an off-the-beaten-track area of New Zealand. It's about four blocks from the main strip in Whanganui (where you would catch the bus, if that's how you traveled). The kitchen is excellent, the dining room has a PC terminal and magazines, you can also picnic in the pretty backyard, and... More

Tamara backpackers is exactly that, a little cosy spot to stop, rest and relax. Big house right on the river, minutes from the center, with a nice garden at the back. The fact that the bedding is old and threadbare and the lounge needs to be a little renovated is more than compensated by the big convivial kitchen, spotless bathrooms... More

Thank you for your kind words about our Lodge. I thought your comments were well thought out very positive in their intent and therefore very useful. Your observations on the standard of the bedding are very accurate as well. In fact the bedding is top of the list for our winter projects and we will be replacing it all particularly... More

The usual tourist track from Wellington the Rotorua/Auckland area follows the east coast of the North Island. We chose a route less traveled through Wanganui (or Whanganui, depending on which sign you see). The trek from Wellington takes you through some scenic rolling hill and farm country. Traffic is light and it’s a leisurely 2-1/2 hr drive. The city of... More

This is a beautiful old house, well-maintained and run, overlooking the Whanganui river. The host was very gracious and helpful in giving us advice about things to do in town. Our room was a grand, old room with high ceilings and big windows overlooking the river. The place is set-up as a 'backpackers lodge', which means that many of the... More

My husband has been staying at Tamara for approximately 20 years and I have been going with him for about 10 years. We have always had a great time and love the atmosphere. We particularly like the ensuite rooms in the annexe which rival many motels. We get a warm welcome from the hosts, Rory and Barbara, and love relaxing... More

Great place to stay while visiting Whanganui and surrounding areas. It was very peaceful place with a lovely back garden containing a trampoline, hammocks, picnic benches etc as well as a balcony with a spectacular view of the river and the hills. Very close to town - only a short walk 5-10 min walk. Rory, Barbara and their sons were... More

I had a "river view" room next to the entrance and reception. It was rather a street view room. I was bothered by traffic noise from the street, noisy guests at reception area and other close public access rooms and by guests in the adjacent room (- my room had only a thin "carton" wall and was not soundproof at... Thank you very much for taking the trouble to post a review. All I can do is apologise for a experience that clearly didn't meet your expectations. Easter is such a busy time for us it is sometimes difficult in a Backpacker setting to keep all things quiet but it is always very much a priority for us. A point... More

We stayed in Tamara for two nights as part of our honeymoon. The place is ok but the owner was conservative and does not want to believe that anything related to his place may be problematic and need to be improved! One example: the place lends bicycles to the guests (the bikes are free but it does not mean that... More

This is a truly exceptional hostel. A friendly welcome matched by superb facilities. I had a room at the back of the main house overlooking the quiet garden. I booked a single, but got a family room with a comfy double bed and the ultimate in backpacker luxury, my own bathroom. This is only the second time in 6 months... More

Hi Lee Thanks very much for your kind words about our Lodge. It is a shame that you were not as enamored with the City itself and I will be passing on your comments to the local marketing organization. Thanks again for taking the time to post a review More

We had such a relaxing/ good time at the Tamara that we extended our stay from two days to a whole week and would have stayed longer had we had more time. Next time! The service was really good and we got a lot of advice from good places to eat, to organising day trips; can highly recommend a trip... More
