This grand old hotel would have been something in a bygone era, however today it is a sad reflection on times past. Some lovely old photographs on the walls were not displayed properly which was a shame. The hotel staff were helpful. The room was in the annexe and reasonably clean but had basic facilities. The so called continental breakfast... More

We stayed here en route between Taupo and Wellington and were pleasantly surprised by both the hotel and the town. The hotel is very well located and was excellent value for money ( 99 dollars including breakfast). The room was well equipped and clean ( fan included which was great). Service was friendly and helpful. We had a pleasant stroll... More

This has indeed once been a grand hotel and the entrance still has a colonial sense of grandeur. The staff were friendly and accommodated us in rooms that were ideal for my elderly mother. The rooms are tired but spacious and well presented, generously offering a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, a hairdryer and iron. The hotel is right... More

This is a lovely hotel, old and original in style. The staff were helpful. Although my room was a little run down it was still very comfortable. The bed could not be faulted for comfort. It was nice to be able to take a well deserved drink up from the bar to the room. Continental breakfast included in the room... More

Whanganui is a charming old town and the Grand Hotel is the finishing touch. Centrally located, well restored and reasonably priced, it is an excellent accommodation option. It has a guest parking area. Our room in the old front area was very nice, with a couple of chairs and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was very clean - it's only... More

Very quiet rooms, lots of little touches for the price, in the centre of an old NZ river town that is well worth visiting. We liked the powerboards for our devices, plus shampoo etc. Comfortable bed. Friendly and helpful management.

We stayed for three nights at this very good value hotel, centrally located downtown, with a comfortable old fashioned impression. We had one of the new rooms at the back of the hotel, so no noise from the bar downstairs but instead an 8am start from the building works going on at the time, but presumably finished now. Breakfast was... More

To be honest, we weren't expecting much more than an old, run down hotel room from this place BUT we couldn't have been more wrong! The room was large and spacious with a huge comfortable bed, good-sized bathroom and fridge and coffee making facilities and a huge tv. The hallways and stairs were very well maintained with interesting historic information... More

What a lovely place to stay. A grand olde world hotel that is being lovingly restored and renovated. Spent quite a lot of time admiring all the wonderful photos and artwork throughout the hotel. Our room was very clean, spacious and perfectly positioned as we were there with extended family. The bar was well frequented by us all as was... More
