Staying in this beautifully converted, historic jail was a really unique experience, not too 'spooky' like I thought it might be, I slept very well. A lot of original features have been saved, so along with the history provided on the walls you do get a feel of what it might have been like to be an inmate! Kind of... More

Our family of 4 (10 and 11 year olds) loved the idea to stay in a jail (gaol)! The family room had all you needed, including complimentary bread, milk, jam and vegimite (😜). The common rooms were fabulous! We would recommend to purchase the history book ($10), it gives the history of the gaol and the people who stayed here!... More

Considering I've only been to Mount Gambier once, I can't really compare the place to other accommodations around town, but I've been to my fair share of budget stays around Australia and I can tell you this is one of the best. I went around Easter and stayed there for 2 nights. I was greeted by the very friendly owner... More

Don't go expecting a 5* luxury hotel, this is a place you go for a really unique experience. We decided to stay here for the novelty, and after arriving late at night we were met by the owner who was great - really helpful, friendly and out-going. He told us to feel free to explore the gaol which was well... More

Our overnight stay in The Old Mount Gambier Gaol was the real deal - an authentic experience, that gave us an insight into how conditions must have been in early Australian gaols. The gaol itself is a well-preserved stone building which only closed in 1995. You stay in an actual prison cell, some with double beds and others with single... More

For some reason, perhaps the lady spirit who allegedly haunts the passage ways, I had trouble getting a good night's sleep but I'd definitely stay again. The goal was well maintained and had a unique atmosphere. Good value for money too.

Really great experience, our first time in a hostel so we were a little apprehensive being used to good hotels but we were looking for something different to try and thought a night in the jail would be fun. It is clean and very friendly the owners live on site and have so much enthusiasm for the gaol. You can wander... More

I loved this place. I was only there for a night and wish i had the chance to stay longer. The Gaol has such character and ambiance that i never experienced anywhere else before. James and Mel, the owners were very warm, friendly and helpful. Nothing like finishing 500kms plus trip on a motorbike and checking in at a place... More

Unfortunately I only stayed for one evening at the Gaol with my friend in one of the cells. Our cell was surprisingly cosy and comfy. We met the owners who are lovely people and have put a lot into restoring the Gaol. There is interesting facts about the Gaol all around which you can explore. It's an old fashioned jail... More

Old Gaol Mt. Gambier is a cool place to spend the night in the hostel. I arrived in the evening and was greeted by the owner. He's a very nice, straightforward and honest guy. Speak with him for a couple of minutes and you'll know that he's very proud of the facility, the work that's gone into restoring it, and... More

Hi and thank you for your kind words. Myself and my wife Melissa do love our old building and we have worked very hard to restore the Old Gaol . We still have a lot of work to do but we are slowly getting there. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of the building and have renovated all the kitchens... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our gaol journey all began with a vision to turn an old debilitated building into a vibrant community asset. We originally hoped to create a new atmosphere that was warm, inviting and both community and family focused. We, along with our two young boys, own and run our family business; we are blessed with the ongoing assistance of our fabulous staff and wonderful family. We have much love for the old building, her history and our spectacular Limestone Coast region and for this reason have opted to remain an independent accommodation provider. We love to travel, enjoy new experiences and meet refreshing people; running the old gaol is allowing us as parents to raise our sons in a beautiful part of Australia whilst still meeting amazing guests from all over the world. Every day we see new faces, are moved and excited by guest’s travel adventures whilst living in an old English prison! We are a young business with many more fun ideas and improvements yet to unveil. We have spent the last three years creating and establishing our business. We are now excited to move onto further promoting who we are and what we have to offer! The Old Mount Gambier Gaol was a functioning 'English Prison' from 1866 to 1994.In 2010 we opened the gaol doors for a new venture. We had a vision to create a place where our community could relax and enjoy various events and where travelers could combine a comfortable stay with a unique experience. Almost three years later we are still pursuing that dream. ... more   less
