This place is a stones throw from the beach, great location just up from the shops as well and not far from the main station and many bars/pubs/restaurants nearby. Our guidebook said that this place used to be a gentleman's club, and the lounge certainly looked like it with leather sofas and wood paneling. We even had a leather sofa in our room. The hostel was handy for the Greyhound bus stop and we enjoyed one free meal night at a local pub. more

Nice hostel, clean and in a pretty good location. But (and this is very picky, I know) because the lounge is so nice, it's a shame the rooms and kitchen are so bland-looking. Still, a very good hostel. more

The Newcastle Beach YHA is contained in a lovely listed building which oozes charm. Our double room was enormous, with large bay windows ensuring it got plenty of light and from which we could see the sea. The hostel has some great communal areas- large leather sofas, wood-panelled walls and an open fireplace making for an altogether unique hostel experience.... more

Stayed here in January 08, and found it a really nice hostel. the building has loads of character - i think the staff told us it used to be a halls of residence for young nurses; it's a huge rambling place with some great communal areas (a very grand living room and a nice basement kitchen with lots of fridge... more

I stayed here and did not want to leave. Beautiful hostel, VERY clean, friendly and helpful staff, gorgeous beaches and so much to do in the city - excellent - recommend the free meal nights and free body boards - 4 free meals a week!
