We picked it randomly on Tripadvisor and were amazed by the place. It is 12 km from Te Anau, therefore, it is easier to get there when you have a car. Cabins have an amazing view on the mountains. Besides they are comfortable, with a spacious bathroom, towels. Recommended!

We had a great two days at the barnyard backpackers near Te anau. Friendly staff and a beautiful location. The rooms are great with a beautiful view only we tought the bed was a bit hard. We enjoyed the beautiful new kitchen very much. Stay there if you can!

The barn and cottages overlooking Fiordland and the Keppler track made us Aaahhhh and never want to leave. The communal living space and kitchen is very roomy and yet very cosy with fireplaces and amazing views. Its a short drive to Te Anau and the start of the Keppler track is very close by. The owners are very friendly and... More

As backpackers, we have stayed in many many hostels and have come to expect a certain standard from hostels. Seeing as they are budget accommodation we don't expect much..............then we got here! We were AMAZED!! We had a 4 bed share room, en suite, for a measly 23 dollars a night (we got this rate as it is winter rates,... More

the barnyard backpackers is a great place to stay in! the rooms and the facilities are big, comftarble and very much clean! the hostel manager is very nice and helped us celebrate our friend's birthday (we didn't have candles or papers to decorate!) the location is a bit far from the city center, but it's close to the hiking tracks... We booked this place without knowing where it actually was located, we wanted somewhere close to go visit the Milford Sound the next day. It was very tricky to get there at night specially because the GPS won't recognize the address a place in Te Anau but in Manapouri. We got there very late just to find the key and... More

Stayed here two nights in an ensuite double and it was one of our favorite hostels on our NZ trip. The room was in a cabin, very spacious, had some nice little details like a flower tapestry and a lovely view of the mountains. However, the walls to the neighbour room are very thin. Also, as it is 6 km... More

I think some of the comments on here are really harsh and unmerited. This is a fantasic hostel with amazing views from the rooms (which little timber cabins) over the surrounding countryside/ mountains. Our room was large and the common areas are fantastic - the best we've experienced in any hostel. There is a lovely atmosphere in the lounge and... More

I just can't understand how this place isn't higher in the ratings. We couldn't believe it when we arrived for around $75 we had a large double cabin with ensuite with amazing views of the mountains. More than we expected for the price. It was very clean. We didnt use any of the facilities in the main house but would... More

This place is pretty special, cabins for rooms at only $76 (for two) we were pretty stunned with what you get. (the guys we met staying in dorms seemed pretty happy too!) - a self contained cabin with private bathroom. - big room and comfy bed - spectacular panoramic views over the mountains from outside your door! - main house...
