Stayed here for two nights, mainly so we could take part in a Milford sound tour which we had booked on to. We had a private room which was clean, although the heater did seem to be knackered! Luckily it wasn't too cold anyway. We stayed in a small apartment like building, but no one else checked in during our... More

I stayed here for 4 nights either side of doing the Milford Track. It's decent value. The staff were always helpful. The kitchen is big and very well equipped with a nice warm tv room. There is a fire you put your shoes/walking boots out to dry. An issue I had is when you don't stay in main building. i... More

The room was quite spacious, and had its own kitchen and bathroom! Perfect for what we needed, and a lot cheaper than other places we had looked at in the town ($28pp, 4 people. The YHA had been 36 dollars!). We had no nice views, but it wasn't hard to go out and walk down to the lake which was... More

I really don't understand why this place is less than 5 stars -- it's warm, it's clean, it's easy to walk to town, there's plenty of parking, and the only reason the main kitchen is sometimes a bit of a mess is because the backpackers won't clean up after themselves, not the hostel's fault at all. I've stayed in the... More

This hostel is more like staying at a friends house with comfortable and spacious rooms. The kitchen is large and well equipped and the entire hostel is very clean. Communal spaces are a little small but the rest of the service makes up for this. The location on the lakefront is amazing! A great base to adventure from.

I had a four bed room with ensuite and all single beds with lots of room, comfortable beds and it was clean. The kitchen was a bit haphazard and it wasn't always easy to find what you needed. The sitting area was very small although had a nice view of the lake. Overall, an average stay despite a nice lakefront... More

Thank you for your review after your stay at the Backpackers. The cupboards and drawers in the Kitchen are marked on the outside with signs to indicate the contents so it is easy to find plates / pots/ cups etc. Always more utensils on hand from reception should you require any other equipment. Pleased you enjoyed the Lakefront location, and... More

I was a little shocked by how nice it was. Didn't really feel like a backpacker/hostel. Sweet deck overlooking the lake. Road is between you and the lake but very little traffic.Stayed in a single and it was huge and the bed was comfortable. Nice and quiet, but a little noisy early in the AM, though I think I slept... Don't let the name "backpackers" turn you away. I stayed here for 1 night en route to Milford Sound. The rooms were large, parking is right up front and the help provided by the reception was great - gave us tips for restaurants in information on a glow-worm trip that we wanted to do. My friend left a luggage lock... More

We stayed here for 2 nights just before Christmas. We were in a tent and my sister was in a dorm room. The place is actually pretty big and my sister was only sharing her dorm with one other person on the 2nd night. Camping was pretty relaxed and we managed to find a shady spot. The communal areas and... More

What a great hostel! We had a private room in the garden with complete privacy. No noise pollution at all. Great value, great location. Would definitely recommend this place if you're coming to the area.
