Bob and Maxine's was by far the best backpackers we have stayed in and we don't expect to find anywhere that surpasses it! It has a charm all of its own with the wonderful views through the common area and of course because of the hospitality of the hosts. We had an unfortunate car accident which meant getting to this... Bob and Maxine's is by far the nicest hostel I've stayed in with respects to location and communal space. The communal space is very homey, covered with flags and filled with couches and chairs surrounding a nice wood burning heater. The kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms are all very nice as well. Bob and Maxine are both very quirky. I traveled... More

Sorry guys I must have been having a bad day & let my sarcasm loose . We do find the big groups can be a challenge & to be fair I did have to clean up after your folks several times to maintain our very high standards. We almost never raise these issues just roll up our sleeves & get... More

Me and my elderly mum stayed here for 4 nights and we loved every single day there. Everything was perfect - the house, the room, the bathroom, the kitchen and the fireplace. Maxine (Bob was away hiking) is the most beautiful woman we have ever met - her character contributes to her beauty and also in her home. She takes... More

Although technically this is a backpackers, it felt more like a B&B. Both Bob and Maxine were friendly and helpful, suggesting places to eat and things to do in the area. We didn't end up staying in the hostel, but in the house, as the hostel was very full. We were lucky enough to have our own private bathroom and... More

The great thing about backpacking is that you get to see so many wonderful places and Milford Sounds was certainly at the top of my list. But sometimes you just need to slow down for a minute and reflect. The comfort of Bob and Maxine's allowed me to take that rest. I was able to kick up my feet and... More

We have stayed at Bob and Maxine's on two occasions. The second time we bought our visiting family with us. The accommodation is spotlessly clean, comfortable and convenient. The kitchen is the best equipped I have found ( we are here on South Island for 6 months so we have been to a lot of backpackers) So if you are... More

Friendly, clean, comfortable and well equipped. I am quite happy to say the best hostel I have stayed in during all my travels. Bob and Maxine are great, I had a bottom bunk saved for me on my return from the Milford Track which was very thoughtful. I hurt my ankle and extending my stay was no prob. Free internets,... More

Lovely hosts, lovely hostel, lovely view - need I say more?! As 200 characters are minimum I obviously do.... Bob & Maxine offer great service and a homey atmosphere all located in a stunning scenery.

One of the best hostels I've stayed in. Bob and Maxine are excellent hosts and really go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. The lounge area is a really nice open space to hang out (particularly important if you've been out in the wilderness like me and want somewhere to just chill out for a day). Lots... More
