I had no idea where to stay in Queenstown. I grabbed a few flyers from other previous hostel and just decided to head to the Hippo Lodge as the others down town were not a steep climb away and probably quite full. It was actually a good decision to crawl up the steep hill with my elephant on my back... More

When I came into town, I had a list of possible backpackers. The first place I called was Hippo Lodge. Shana answered the phone, and there was something about her presence and what was offered that had me not call any others, follow my intuition and look for the place. I was not to be disappointed. Shana was extremely helpful.... More

We've stayed in Queenstown before, an experience which was expensive and lacking in service, but when we came to Hippo Lodge though, it was a totally different matter! Good service, really friendly staff and nice kitchen facilities. No hidden extra fees (but as always, you must pay for internet and laundry), and at a reasonable price (for Queenstown): 28 dollars... Hi JoseLoevig, Thank you for your review! Yes, we are "a little home away from home" as you put it. We might make this our new slogan! ;) We want our guests to be relaxed and happy and glad you enjoyed your stay. As well, thanks for mentioning that we have no "hidden fees" - which is true! For us,... More

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Reservations and bookings in advance worked properly. Always a good feeling getting warm welcomed. They offer different dorm types, which all are very comfortable, getting cleaned every day. Same as the bathrooms. On every floor you have a kitchen and living room for collective use. You get a small wifi usage for every... More

Hippo Lodge is a spacious, very clean and quite accommodation at reasonable price. One of the best hostel we have stayed in. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The small hike up the hill is well worth the effort for the FANTASTIC VIEW. We really enjoyed our stay.

Stayed at Hippo Lodge for 5 nights recently and really liked it. It is a bit if a trek up the hill to get to it but well worth the effort. Arranged as a number of buidlings over different levels, it offers great views over the lake and surrounding countryside. I stayed in the "top house" which has about 5... More

I just returned from here I really enjoyed my stay! Its no more than a 5min walk to the main street. All the staff I encountered were super friendly and helpful. The place itself is really nice and really clean. I stayed in a single room and it was a good size. The kitchen and lounge are really big and... More

We stayed in one of the double, non-ensuite rooms, and it was great. One floor of the house just has three rooms on it, one with an en-suite, so you only share a bathroom with one other double room, and a kitchen between three rooms. The kitchen was well-equipped and clean, and the bathroom was clean too. Nice big queen... More

The room was acceptable, but the toilet/shower did not look too clean. Plus there was only one of each, so had to queue. The kitchen has a really strange smell and the TV is in there, so if your room is around that area, you won't get much sleep. It is very noisy, which obviously is dependent on who stays... More

I have not noticed any strange smells in the kitchen, but our rubbish bins are emptied daily and must have taken care of what you smelled. We want our guests to be happy... More

Hippo lodge has a great view over Queenstown but as other reviews have mentioned this means a bit of a steep climb up from the bottom and then a number of stairs to the dorms. The hostel itself was okay nothing fantastic to rave about and it appears that there are quite a few long term residents in the hostel.... More
