This is an older style hostel - 3 converted houses all with character so there are not a lot of people together. I liked it because it was in a quiet street but I was still only 5 minutes from the centre of town. It was very clean and kept clean every day which is important to me and they... more

We stayed 6 nights at this lodge and it only cost us $199 US dollars!!!! The staff was great, they helped us book tours. I would suggest requesting to stay in the White House portion of the lodge-that is where we stayed and got the great views over the town. We had a double room. It had the large bed... more

Hippo lodge is great. A steep hill to walk up yes, but the view is worth it. If you cant be bothered with the walk a taxi will cost you $6 from town. Book your airport shuttles through Hippo and that will save you a few dollars too. I stayed in a 5 bed dorm, no ladders to the top... more

We stayed in the deluxe double and it was great value. Plenty of space in the kitchen and living areas for longer stays. More convenient if you have a car. more

The hippo lodge is a fairly typical hostel as far as amenities and cleanliness as concerned but Shayna, the girl that worked at the front of the hostel was amazing. We were greeted with a nice big smile and recommendations on how to spend our time in Queenstown. The suggestions ranged from backpacker parties at the local bars to serene... more

Before we booked into this hostel, we read the reviews by other travellers and was convinced that it was a great place. Maybe we had a very high expectation to begin with. We stayed at the double en-suite room located on the top floor of it's 'white house'. The view from the balcony next to the lounge area wasn't superb... more

Stayed at Hippo for 4 nights in July 2008. Rooms are spacious, comfortable, warm and clean. Toilet and shower facitilies are spacious and clean. Communal areas are cozy and clean. Internet Access. Laundry Service. Located on a very steep hill, but therefore has great views over beautiful Queenstown. Supermarket five minute walk away. Staff are very friendly, approachable and helpful.... more

The place just made my skin crawl. The state of the carpet was digusting, stains everywhere and I don't think it had seen a vacuum for quite some time. It smelt of dirty old socks. They ask you to remove your pillowcase before you leave, argh I'm pleased I had no idea at the time what I had been laying... more

I stayed in the room upstairs next to the lounge... the view was amazing (largely due to the lodge located on the top of the hill as mentioned in other reviews). Awesome service, clean and comfortable beds and cozy lounge. And all this for $27 was a real bargain! Would definitely recommend :) more

Styaed at the Hippo Lodge for two nights in Queenstown last week. Had an upstairs room with queen bed and two bunks - shared bath. Sheets and towels provided free of charge. Hippo lodge was very, very clean and beds were comfortable. Cheap internet access, helpful staff, and a great kitchen to boot. The views from the upstairs rooms were... more
