We have just returned from a visit to beautiful Stewart Island in the deep south of New Zealand - in fact even further south than Invercargill, one of the southernmost cities in the world. Even when flying into Invercargill, you cannot help but notice a beautiful old building - which really stands out - that is obviously in great shape... more

We only had time for one night in Invercargill and after staying at the Victorian Railway Hotel we wished for more. Owners, Eian & Trudy have done a marvellous job in restoring the old hotel. On a cycling tour around the South Island we picked this hotel out of the NZ B and B book while staying at a B and B in Dunedin. Walked in on arrival in Invercargill. The Victoria Railway Hotel is in a heritage building (built 1896) but recently upgraded. Our room was comfortable and the facilities in general were fantastic. There's a huge in house DVD Library - private bar for guests and the restaurant which is run by the hotel owners. There is no chef but you wouldn't know it. We had a delicious... more
